Wild Asparagus

Profitable dog walk this morning. Spotted some wild asparagus growing at the side of our chemin.

The nicest asparagus I have ever had was collected from a road verge (v small road).

Me too, wild asparagus is delicious. Hard work to pick but worth the effort.

Is this the same as wild hops? An old friend of ours used to pick it in spring. He said it was wild hops but they tasted like asparagus when young

I wouldn’t have known, but it seems that wild hops (hop shoots aka) and wild asparagus taste and look similar but are quite different.

And you can make a delicious pesto with wild garlic.

Yes, I make a pesto from wild garlic too. Nice change from the original version. Also nice is a parsley and walnuts recipe.

Never heard of wild hops but wild asparagus is very distinctive.

Wild hops are good for you but be careful with wild asparagus.

What are you telling me ??? I have just eaten a generous portion this evening.

Just be aware. Might be totally unlike the version of wild asparagus that you have eaten.

Wow, I had no idea! I am happy to report that we have suffered no symptoms whatsoever (except a little joy at eating free food bountifully supplied by our environment).

Yes, I was aware of “something” to do with wild asparagus but had forgotten quite what it was.

This was December 2024

I haven’t eaten wild asparagus very often but I haven’t had any ill effects. Hops on the other hand, we had a golden one in our UK garden and I came out in a rash if I touched it.

Not everyone is affected… and some have been affected in recent years whereas they had no problems in preceding years…

It’s all very mystifying

When we lived in the Tarn the neighbour introduced us to it - respunsous, or something similar. I think we ate it with a vinaigrette. I’m afraid I didn’t go out looking for it!

Respounchou

The old saying of not overindulging of any one thing, ie the wild asparagus, probably applies here.

If you’ve ever picked wild asparagus, you might agree with me that finding enough to overindulge in is hard work.

I was lucky. I sat down on a bank for a rest and when I looked closer I found I was surrounded by the stuff. Like trompetts, you need to get your eye in first then you start seeing them everywhere

Absolutely. Once you get accustomed to seeing what you are looking for you cannot un-see it everywhere
