The switch to pellets seems to have gone well. Perhaps coincidental to the slightly improved weather, he’s not pooed so far, just pee.
Which brings me to disposal of the used pellets. My plan is biodegradable bags (corn or potato starch) but can they go in the compost bin? I’m hoping there won’t be too much, but is there a limit, in terms of proportion pellets:peelings/old veg/eggshells etc.?
Pee is fine, it contains urea which will help composting process. But remove any poo and dispose elsewhere as that might contain something you don’t want in your plant beds.
I was told long ago by the dechetterie to put dog poo in a bag and add it to the rubbish bag for the bin man. He has never complained but then he wouldn’t know unless he busted the securely fastened bag, would he?
But we have a fosse, not mains sewage, and it is designed for 2 people, not the equivalent of 4, so not a a good idea really is it? Even with Fran gone there are still 3 of us here.
I see David, all depends then on the pets volume of excrement, equal to or more than a human? It is also possible with a fosse not being adequately fed that its action could slow so a bit of extra could keep it ticking over better.
As the Crap Collector In Chief here I can attest that they contribute, if anything, more than their fair share.
As to ticking time bombs I have learned to leave well alone if all appears to be well. When we bought in 1993 the estate agent, in answer to my question ‘how often does it need to be emptied?’ said, ‘never’.
Just twice in that 32 years has it backed up into the toilet and needed to be emptied, so I think we have the balance right and I don’t intend to meddle with it.
