Notoriety has doubled the price…
We had a rented house for a year which had a number of very odd events happen in the year we were there.
One of the incidents happened again after we left but in the same street (maybe same house) - my wife saw a report of it on a TV program.
I am very sensitive to ‘atmospheres’ and there are a couple of houses I have visited that have a very bad feel about them.
I certainly wouldn’t buy a haunted house, have enough trouble with spirits as it is
After we carried out a large extension to our house in the Cotswolds we experienced a ghost.
It was like a blurred outline, brown and grey which passed across the front of the house and walked up a path to the top road.
We also heard typing on our computers.
We asked someone who had been born in our little valley and she had no knowledge of ghosts.
It was not unpleasant and we had local vicar in to help it move on, which it did to a certain extent.
No problem as I don’t believe in ghosts, only crappy tv programs featuring scouse con men re-enforce s beliefs in ghosts and Hollywood of course.
Since when has a supposed ghost ever hurt anyone?
I don’t believe in ghosts or the supernatural but I wouldn’t touch that house with a bargepole. Buying it for under market value would make me feel as if I had profited from the tragedy. If I remember correctly the father disappeared in my neck of the woods leaving his car in the parking of the HotelF1 Roquebrune. The nutcase could still be around.
Logically you are correct about ghosts not hurting yourself but do you recall Ray Stephens (Stevens?) song ‘Sitting up with the Dead’? One of the funniest songs ever written and I recall the line that says something like ‘the dead can’t hurt you but can make you hurt yourself (trying to get away from them)
I would never knowingly buy a haunted house, but it seems almost a certainty as I love old houses, and on three separate occasions (and one ongoing) have had positive physical contact. One when I was quite young but newly married, when both my wife and I watched in amazement when a clock on the mantlepiece raised up moved out and crashed into the fireplace. In the same house we often were disturbed by someone walking up the stairs, but we never saw anything. My sister in law has the same thing in her old house here as well, and too even to be house settling noises.
In Burgundy/Jura border we bought an old farmhouse where the large kitchen separated the bedrooms from the bathroom/toilet. On one of the first nights there I made a visit to the loo only to be grasped from behind and arms wrapped around me. I was more shocked than frightened and supposed vaguely that my wife was playing a trick, although she is not a trick type person. Anyway a brief struggle and a loud suggestion from me to indulge in a little ‘sex and travel’ it stopped, but I had woken my wife who was sitting up in bed when I returned asking ‘what was that all about?’ So I said nothing other than I just tripped over the cat’ - completely forgetting we didn 't even have a cat. Never happened again. The ongoing one is here and is a ghost cat who jumps on my bed most nights, walks up to the pillow and then disappears. I see nothing at all, just the movement. I have a motion sensor light in my room and this always comes on at these times.
I do have a real cat who does this on occasion, so I know the difference. No problem either as it does no harm and doesn’t frighten me at all.
My best friend in the village is the retired Abbé and I asked him if he had ever done exorcisms, and he said he had, but only on one occasion had he really experienced a ‘presence’.
So who knows? We don’t know a fraction about ourselves and our capabilities. I am not a religious person at all but do believe we have a spiritual side to our nature, but how that manifests itself I haven’t got a clue.
My issue is how the spiritual side can as you have said can move physical objects cause a thermal disturbance to trigger your light and wrap around you? Also due to the large amount of deaths over the centuries how crowded it must be where they are.
Hello Norman
I too have had various ‘unexplained’ things happen over the years. In various places and also during bright sunny days ( so no imagination during the dark night) too many to recount here.
The house I now live in has 2 ‘bad areas’. One being the kitchen where my mother was actually shoved aside whilst in her wheelchair. As her wheelchair is electric and quite heavy, and was turned off at the time it took a considerable force to make this happen.
I actually bought some Black Tourmaline, a protection Crystal, and placed it in various corners of the house.
A few days later I felt a really cold chill in the kitchen and caught a shadow out of the corner of my eye. I was so angry that I shouted at the unwanted ‘presence’ to go away. From time to time it returns there and I ‘charge’’ the crystals and it becomes calm again.
The second area is the grenier where I have my bedroom, during one night I actually felt something on the bed and the covers were held down over my face. I pushed out with my hand and shouted go away and the pressure was lifted. Now whether this is the same ‘presence’ that is sometimes in the kitchen or another one I don’t know. All I do know is that since I placed crystals around the room and bed, including under my pillow it hasn’t happened again.
I do know when my crystals need recharging because I can feel the presence.
There is also a cat that mum has seen regularly, it’s grey and crosses the room and disappears through the wall, no problems as it’s benign.
Those who have never experienced these phenomena will ever remain sceptic, it’s no skin off my nose, I know what I have seen and experienced and couldn’t give a toss whether they believe or not.
All I will say is that if water holds memories, stones too, then those of us who are more sensitive to atmosphere could be getting the feedback from our surroundings …
The problem here John is we are working to OUR sense of logic - but is it not a bit arrogant to genuinely think we have all the answers to everything? I have been accused of arrogance more than once in my life, but I have never had it to believe either I, or anyone else has this ability.
I agree that some people seem to be more sensitive to whatever it is - or what it seems to be. Like you I know what I have experienced, but on occasions it has not been JUST me but others also;
Like what they now call ‘precognition’ which by our own sense of logic shouldn’t happen, but millions have experienced it - knowing place that you know you have never visited.
I recall with my first wife taking a driving holiday into Germany, where I had never been and describing to her exactly what was to come over a distance of about 5kms, so it wasn’t just a flash or hiccup in my consciousness. It has never happened lik that ever again, but most of us I would suggest have had the same or similar happen to us?
i accept your doubts John, but then again take look at the stars on a clear night and maybe you too will sense how tiny and insignificant we are? I have often wondered if we are atoms in a chairleg in a much bigger world and ad infinitum.
My great grandma came from Gloucestershire but moved up to Lancashire as a young woman. Over 50 years later another of her great granddaughters moved to live in Gloucester. The first time they visited she showed her now husband where everything was and guided them both around the city. So much so he actually said to her ‘I thought you hadn’t been here before ‘ and she genuinely had no idea how she knew all of this. One of the spooky things was that at that point we had lost contact with her through family issues and it was 18 months later when we met up again that my Mum told her there was a family connection to the area ,up to then she had had no idea
No problem Norman, no not arrogant to question, we definitely do not have all the answers either. I do apply rational and logical thought but as said in another thread there are as yet unexplained problems to try and understand like if water does have a memory, something has to be happening just as some homeopathy appears to work.
Hollywood has a lot own up to with installing fear into people. For instance, how many SFR’s actually believe if you set off a sprinkler head in a building all of the sprinklers will go off creating that big evacuation scene used in films?
For those who believe, a visit to Derren Brown when he performs his spiritual reading would add some reality to the frauds out there.
Norman I still do, have a reasonable telescope!
The mind is amazing in many ways. The anorexic who sees a fat person when they view themselves in a mirror, are they wrong or is everyone else?
I wouldn’t buy a house that was “known” to be haunted…
I do feel that houses have “atmospheres”…when my mom and dad were house hunting when I was around 12/13 we viewed many houses…there was one which my dad really liked…the perfect location…and the layout…and on paper it fitted perfectly and ticked all the boxes…
On viewing day I felt like I was being watched and followed and couldn’t wait to get out…my mom as soon as we got back in the car said to my dad…”absolutely no way are we buying that house…!” She had felt even more than I had…
As an adult I’ve lived in a house where one of my daughters regularly saw a milking maid cross the garden and asked me who she was…
At the same house when my son had his mates round and I checked in on them I later asked him about the friend with the bandages round his head…no such friend…but I know what I saw…
Edited to add that I wouldnt definitively say these are “ghosts” as such but maybe stone and water pathways running underneath buildings are what hold the memory…and under certain atmospheric conditions “replay” past events…???
Well as my house is built over a source and there is an ancient well and lavoir on the land next to it, that may be why there are so many ’ atmospheric’ happenings.
Reminding me of other incidents//time/times in my life…One friend got into the ouiji board…she was having problems with “poltergeist” activity in one of her son’s bedrooms…he was brain damaged at birth and had cerebral palsy…when he was a toddler it got so bad that there were times she couldn’t get into his bedroom as furniture had fell across the door…I agreed to do the ouiji board with her and the “message” that came through appeared to be for me and congratulating me on the birth of my first child from a deceased relative…no malevolence…
Not much help for my friend and eventually she did call in an exorcist but even so moved house shortly after…
Isn’t calling an exorcist paying tribute to Catholicism?
Probably is John…and she wasn’t particularly religious either…although her mother was…she told me about lots of happenings…pins suddenly appearing out of nowhere…a voice on the phone saying her name when when she picked up to dial out…I don’t doubt her experience at all…she was badly frightened by it all and did what she thought might help…the only thing I personally witnessed was the message that came through for me having agreed to do the ouiji board with her…
