We first became aware of this group all of whom I think live in a care home in New England (maybe more than one) many years ago after a Channel 4 documentary and, when they later did a European tour we booked tickets for a show in Angers. Taking the caravan and 2 dogs with us we drove up and parked for a few days at Chez Paul’s routier truck stop south of the city.
Thoroughly enjoyed it but as far as I know, they have never left the US east coast since, understandably as many were/are in their 80s and 90s,
Not on that occasion but later we saw Fred Knittle sing Cold Play’s ‘Fix You’. I have never heard Cold Play’s original version but I don’t mind, this one is simply perfect.

Chez Paul ! Last time I was in there it was for sale, as I guess Paul was retiring.
I do remember the convincing proof of global warming evidenced behind the bar.
Looking at the www it is open today, and since I am near Saumur at the moment…
Let me know how it goes, always a favourite of mine, with wagon down in the quarry, or caravan and family in the small rear car park.
Went to Chez Paul for lunch.
Madame Paul (?) was there. The resto has been sold now, and the new owners are moving in soon, and it will continue as a Routier she says.
One of few still left with servez-vous vins, as well as starters and cheese.
Good French grub.
I don’tthink I’ll ever make it again there, because I am weel beoyond my trvel by date, but if I do, byt somemamgical restautre\tion, I woll tell 'et is you who told me.
In translation ,because I have had my 4 alcoholic events for the night ( G&T, Kir, Porto and Calva) a second go at the illiteration:
I don’t think I’ll ever make it again there, because I am well beyond my travel by date, but if I do, by some magical restauration, I will tell it is you who told me.
Thanks mate.
What!? No vin ordinaire from a litre bottle with a foil and plastic cap with your dinner?
Or can we just take that as a given?
Come on: what is the name for the plonk with the stars on the shoulder of the bottle? I was told that, but can’t recall it now.
Oh dear, can you not see that I am much more sophisticated in my choice of so last century tipple?
As fast as you can down to Macon and the Bakehouse cockroaches in the shower, the 8pm rush on a Sunday night after the enforced protection of the French weekend, and slithering down the Blanc terrified of locking up the retarder via the twisted nightmare of Cenis in the dark.
Oh how I miss it. At least how I miss talking about it.
Ahh…the rose tinted specs of yesteryear. I have to remove mine more often than I even seem to put them on!
How many times have you heard “When we used to run the old road”, and thought “silly ole duffer” in your youth?
And how many times since have you said it? Caught myself a few too many times lately…
.
Anyway the tasting of the fizzy stuff in Ackerman’s went well, so off to find my bunk now.
