Your film or TV series recomendations (2021 and on TV binge)

We record weekly series until all episodes have been shown then watch them on consecutive nights. We have a humax box which lets us record terrestrial TV so that’s how we pick up the best of what they have to offer.

I struggle with a lot of what’s on offer these days because all the characters are so unsympathetic. I don’t understand why writers and directors think it’s a good idea to make everyone so ghastly and behave in such awful ways. Obviously characters can be flawed but if I have not sympathy for anybody and I really don’t care if they live or die / succeed or fail then I pretty quickly give up.

Ah, yes, there lies the problem. I do have a Humax but it stopped working properly some years ago and I have not replaced it. Having just replaced my non-recording Manhattan I am a bit wary of shelling out again.

Know what you mean about characters being horrible. However you have the advantage of me in being able to give up apparently easily in the middle of things. As I said above, doesn’t come easy to me. :slightly_frowning_face:

Life is too short - and getting shorter by the day.

I started the Netflix documentory about Vince McMahon and the wrestling world last night. If you like the US wrestling scene, its quite an eye opener about how just one man ran it and now the chickens have come home to roost with all sorts of allegations coming out of the woodwork.

I used to watch wrestling on the telly in England what seems like 100 years ago, just for a laugh, it was so ridiculous, but eventually got bored with. In Australia it was even dafter with many US imports I seem to remember

This documentory has The Rock, Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan amongst many others giving their side of how they were made famous and at what personal costs.

I know this will make me sound like a strange-woman… but I’m thoroughly enjoying watching Larkrise to Candleford…
we’ve all the dvd’s and know it more or less by heart… but who cares… it’s gentle humour… ideal to relax and chuckle.

Yep. I put in a bit of effort, so as not to give up to easily, but I usually know what I’m not going to like and have become ruthless. I make an exception for films.

I remember someone speaking about reading Les Misérables, who made a point of the importance of not being afraid of skipping over large chunks of narrative (Hugo being a master of such writing, in whatever sense you like) if you were getting bogged down. Speed-reading is also a useful skill, unfortunately not applicable to tv.

Fast forward if recorded. or on i-player (or equivalent) or a DVD?

I love The Good Doctor (yes I know, mixed reviews) but cannot bear the gory operation bits so I just cover my eyes and wait for them to finish - the dialogue is usually fine.

For some reason, I now find myself unable to cope with gratuitous violence and gore… seeing people suffer… I used to be able to tell myself “it’s all make-believe”.

so many dvd’s which we’ve previously enjoyed… are left at the back of the cupboard… as I now search for something gentler…

Perhaps it’s because there is too much horror in the real world… that I need a little escapism

Do not even contemplate watching Night Sleeper (BBC iplayer) Terrible. Interesting plot but bad casing, bad acting and bad execution…

Plus one. I accidentally missed the third episode and didn’t realise it 'till the 5th. It was that meaningless. And I was shouting at the screen when they said that they would crash in 2 minutes and all they could do was rabbit on about their useless lives. ‘Bang, too late’ I shouted, it was so boring I was actually timing them.

I did not even get through the second! What immediately got me is them using the satellite phone inside the train… and the casting just awful

Have watched Ludwig? (bbc iplayer) A murder in each episode but strangely compelling and very amusing.

Midsomer Murders, Death in Paradise etc… all ok…
and, of course, Hercule Poirot … wonderful stuff… despite someone dying… :+1:

We watched ’Joker’ last night. A bit of a hard watch at times but Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic in it. No wonder he won an Oscar.

I enjoyed that one and was hoping the sequel would be as good but the reviews don’t look promising…
