Yes I enjoyed the first one as well. Got right inside my head with the character too. I never take note of reports on sequels as often or not, they can be far better than the originals - you have to watch and make your own mind up.
You obviously didn’t see the sequels to Pitch Perfect! ![]()
Not exactly a film I enjoyed, or would recommend, but it’s a b&w film I’ve not seen before called ‘Pinky’ - the name given a black person who passes as looking white, in this case a young woman.
A controversial 1949 film about racial prejudice, celebrated in southern American States, but banned in Marshall, Texas. The manager of the theatre where it was displayed was fined, but the conviction and the ban was overturned by the Supreme Court.
The film was 20th Century-Fox’s second-most-successful film of 1949, starring Jeanne Crain and Ethel Barrymore.
I’ve never experienced prejudice of any kind and the film shocked me in a personal sort of way for its portrayal of racism.
There have been other films I’ve seen, later films, but not like this early 1949 Hollywood version.
Not my cup of tea. I like horror, action and murder/thrillers. Final Destination was one where the sequels got gorier and gorier.
Its starting on TF1 tonight here in France if anyone wants to see it but can’t get it via other means - in french but if you have a Sony TV like mine, you can change the language settings and get it in english.
Thanks for the warning, I’ll avoid watching it there too ![]()
I recently found an app on github that lets you download stuff from iPlayer to keep. Just need to have a VPN so that iPlayer isn’t blocked for geographical reasons… which for most people means they can watch iPlayer anyway. But, I thought it was pretty cool nonetheless.
I won’t bother downloading Night Sleeper though.
It’s very clever and you can use it in scripts to automate your downloads.
I thought the chap who played Ludwig was by far the weakest actor, which isn’t always the case with comedians. But I enjoyed the tips of the hat to Golden Age conventions like locked room mysteries and the final gathering of those involved for the denoument. I’d watch the inevitable next series.
I have only recently discovered that “dénouement” literally means “unknotting”
Another recommendation is “Dickensian” on radio 4. Three of Dickens’ books have been dramatised and made available on BBC Sounds
James O’Brien recommended Professor T (ITV) as being similar to Ludwig. I haven’t started it yet.
Is that David Mitchell? One of my all time comedy heroes, which is precisely why I have deliberately avoided watching it. He comes into the category of genius with lightning wit but useless at reading other peoples’ lines, and I do not want to be disappointed.
I am not enamoured of Grace, the Brighton detective series; because I don’t think the plot sparkles and the main man’s (John Simm) acting is wooden. I have also never seen Life on Mars in which he apparently starred with Philip Glenister.
So I had some misgivings when I saw an ancestry story featuring both of them and thought that the promised surprise would be that they are related.
Instead I got an hour of embarrassing revelations, though not earth shattering, as the pair were dragged from Yorkshire to Kent and back again, peppered by bloky (what were hoped to be matey bon mots) and at least 2 ‘wows’ in every sentence.
I should have followed my instincts and left well alone, I could have watched the life and times of that child murderer from Derby and been more entertained.
Yes. He’s not as bad as I feared he’d be.
If you look on it as an hommage to the Agatha Christie style of detective story, you might not find it too bad.
thoroughly enjoying Professor T… and waiting impatiently for the next series on dvd… ![]()
Now enjoying Professor T, which is as silly as Ludwig in concept. The puzzles are perhaps a little more sophisticated.
But finding the way the writer(s) insist that members of CID are addressed as “Detective”, by members of the public and uniform, really irritating.
And whoever wrote the courtroom scenes has plainly never seen a Crown Court trial.
It’s the American invasion. Like ‘stopping by’ instead of ‘calling in’ etc… ![]()
And another thing … why is everything so dark? Ludwig and Prof T. Even in bright daylight, they contrive to make it dark.
'cos there are dark and dastardly deeds… as well as dark, dark thoughts… oooh eeergh ![]()
I blame HDR
Because HDR TVs can show more shadow detail the producers seem to decide they must make everything dark ombre.
