If you scroll down to the video, Trucks is playing ‘Tiger’
I’ve pretty much given up playing but can’t seem to be able to part with my last guitar. If I had my way I’d probably decorate the house with them!
Yesterday I watched a YouTuber comparing three 50s style Telecasters - a Squier Affinity costing $250, a Fender Vintera II 50s Tele at $1500 ish, and a Fender Custom Shop special at $3500.
Obviously the Custom Shop one was the best, but the Vintera was not far behind at half the price and the Squier had a really good neck for the money and acquitted itself creditably.
It’s hard to buy a really bad guitar these days - more money gets you better quality wood and hardware and also more care given to fit and finish, obviously, but it’s diminishing returns. The likes of Squier and Harley Benton make some decent stuff.
I like Andy’s channel. ![]()
It’s funny that my ears aren’t great with speech and decoding words and I have tinnitus, but in the listening test I could hear quite clearly which was which.
The 2 proper teles were thinner and crisper, more direct, while the squier was splashy and a bit congested. In isolation generally not a problem although the squier wouldn’t sound so good with heavy drive on but might be nicer clean with a bit more fatness and warmth. Getting great drive sounds is, to me, more difficult for cheap guitars than sounding great clean, although that’s often down to the amp and speaker too.
My regular gigging slide guitar is a Harley Benton Aeolus, and it’s a really nice instrument.
I hope you were expecting it ![]()

I have just tripped over the Classic Album Review channel on YouTube and am thoroughly enjoying falling down this rabbit hole.
Went to our local micro brasserie today, run by two brunette women. They’ve named the brasserie after themselves.
In the end, I couldn’t choose so bought half a dozen of each of their six brews.
Our wisteria is starting to bloom at the moment. Last year it flowered 5 times. We have taken cuttings from it and planted elsewhere around the garden and the displays are wonderful. And several years ago we bought a pink wisteria. It has never flowered to date but Stuart said he looked at it this morning and it has flower buds that will be out fully within the next few days. Can’t wait for that!
Here is a picture of the blue wisteria from last year (not enough flowers to take a photo just yet)
It looks stunning, Rachel. Is it scented wisteria?
I miss the one we had in England.
Yes it is and at the moment whilst sitting on the seat for our morning coffee (which by the way, is cleaner than it is in the photo!) the smell from that and the chocolate vine (which smells of vanilla) and the hyacinths is wonderful.
And I forgot to add that in a few weeks time we’ll also get the perfume from the honeysuckle and jasmine too!
I’m so envious, lol.
And if you tell me you’ve got a bougainvillea in your garden I will be envious of you. We had one two years ago but even though we brought it indoors in the winter, it didn’t survive. And we’ve been watching some old Monty Don videos of him in Italy and Greece. They had a beautiful bougainvillea in one of the programmes and it was a pale lilac colour. Not so stunning as the cerise and red ones but it was beautiful.
We plan to get a bougainvillea this year. I’ll keep you posted.
Just had a zoom call with our son in Switzerland - it was good to see him again.
They are rampant down here, grow like weeds and take over if you are not careful. I have.a bird of paradise plant doing well in the bit of garden we have dug out, my son has a huge one which each year flowers for weeks at a time with the beautiful orange and blue blooms.
We’ll be happy if it survives, wwe’ve lost a couple in the past.
The neck is fatter than expected, tones are crisp through my vox handbag practice amp and it’s not a lightweight despite a thinner body than a real LP. It came with DR snakeskin strings, and while they do last well, tonally and feeling wise they’re not my favourite. There are minor flaws and the nut could be usefully cut a little deeper, might yet change bridge and tuners, but it plays okay and was good for £170.
I haven’t owned one but the consensus seems to be that H-B are great for what you pay.
Ditto Squier. I have a Squier Cabronita Tele (the one with the Gretsch-style pickups) and its setup was nearly perfect out of the box.
The only thing I changed on it was the bridge, which was a bit scratchy under my palm.
Looks well worth the money, you can’t beat Thomman customer service, you’ll have fun with it.
