Any cheerful news today? (Nothing negative please! šŸ™‚) (Part 2)

After much deliberation, we have just booked my 100-year old mother for a trial stay at a local care home in mid June.

If she’s happy with the trial then we will move her in permanently and put her house on the market, and I will then be able to move to Cornwall to be with my partner Di.

A big step but it’s time - I have been increasingly stressed looking after her and worrying if she is going to have a fall when I’m not there etc.

Hope the trial goes well for both of you.

I know what you mean about the stress. We had my mother living with us through her final years and she had a bell she could ring if she needed me in the night. It was a doorbell that went from her room to the hall, where I could hear it upstairs. For years afterwards the sound of a doorbell ringing, or the phone going late at night would make me jump out of my skin.

Yes we have an alarm that she wears which will call my mobile, or my brother’s if I don’t pick up.

I leave my phone on all night…

Thinking of you and hoping that things work out OK for you and your mum Chris. We don’t need you to be stressed and from experience, this will take much of the pressure off you. Keep us updated please.

Love from Rachel :pink_heart:

A lot of mothers would think themselves lucky to have such a caring son, I hope it all goes well for both you and mum. Fingers crossed you get your move to Cornwall soon, ( we’ll be down there in a couple of weeks, so any tips on places to visit would be appreciated ).

Not quite the same scenario but BIL developed dementia and Sis+kids were trying to keep him at home. Eventually with much angst they moved him to a care home where is soooo much happier! And so are they.

It worked for my mother too, she was much better. It wasn’t a huge home but they had activities for the residents. Although she had dementia, she still annoyed the other residents by winning all the quizzes. As long as it wasn’t current events or ā€˜what I had for lunch today’…

I haven’t explored Cornwall very much myself yet so am not much help - depends whereabouts you will be staying too.

There’s the Eden Project of course.

Let me know where you are going to be and I will ask Di.

Thank you for your good wishes everybody - and glad to hear that your experiences with care homes for parents have been positive.

The one we chose seemed a lot nicer than many in the area, and is not the most expensive either!

Also I know two people that work for that care home group via my business networking, and I have done photography work for them, which also gives me confidence we have made a good choice.

We’re renting a cottage just outside Liskeard, already got the Eden Project penciled in for a visit as I’ve wanted to go for ages. I’m really looking forward to the whole visit and exploring, but would welcome recommendations from your lady, thanks Chris.

Eden Project is essential, but these are less well-known, but worth a visit

Also:-

The Minack Theatre at:_

It’s a recreation of a Classical Greek open air theatre perched on a cliff above the ocean. It’s also an interesting micro-climate ,when I visited I was surprised to find many succulents that I’d associated with S Africa.

Yes Heligan is good, I couldn’t think of the name.

Funnily enough, I’ve just booked the ferry from Roscoff and staying in Cornwall for a few nights as OH never been there. Eden project is first on the list of things to see.
I walked round the coast path back in 1977.

Ah yes the Minack, several appearances there, locals are a tough lot, if the weather turns to storms they just sit tight wrapping themselves up.

George Takei was in the audience watching one of our shows, ā€œqiasimodoā€ it was. First to use that as a joke buys a round for everyone

Haven’t seen a bee eater here, but BirdNet definitely thinks there’s one close to here.

I’d forgotten about the Lost Gardens, it’ll definitely go on the list and I’m sure I saw something about the Minack theater, but can’t quite remember, thanks DrMark.

@Debby_Wade here’s Di’s list:

St Michael’s Mount
Lost Gardens of Heligan
Minack Theatre
Tate Gallery in St Ives
Pendennis Castle
Lanhydrock House
Lands End (it’s touristy but still fun to go)
Charlestown Harbour and Fowey are nice places to visit
Port Issac, Polperro and Padstow are good to visit too

A visit to the Blue Peter is/was definitely worth it. Over 25 years since I went but I bet it hasn’t changed much.

Thank Di for me please Chris, the list will be passed on to the chauffeur, keep him busy planning routes and timings
