After much deliberation, we have just booked my 100-year old mother for a trial stay at a local care home in mid June.
If sheās happy with the trial then we will move her in permanently and put her house on the market, and I will then be able to move to Cornwall to be with my partner Di.
A big step but itās time - I have been increasingly stressed looking after her and worrying if she is going to have a fall when Iām not there etc.
I know what you mean about the stress. We had my mother living with us through her final years and she had a bell she could ring if she needed me in the night. It was a doorbell that went from her room to the hall, where I could hear it upstairs. For years afterwards the sound of a doorbell ringing, or the phone going late at night would make me jump out of my skin.
Thinking of you and hoping that things work out OK for you and your mum Chris. We donāt need you to be stressed and from experience, this will take much of the pressure off you. Keep us updated please.
A lot of mothers would think themselves lucky to have such a caring son, I hope it all goes well for both you and mum. Fingers crossed you get your move to Cornwall soon, ( weāll be down there in a couple of weeks, so any tips on places to visit would be appreciated ).
Not quite the same scenario but BIL developed dementia and Sis+kids were trying to keep him at home. Eventually with much angst they moved him to a care home where is soooo much happier! And so are they.
It worked for my mother too, she was much better. It wasnāt a huge home but they had activities for the residents. Although she had dementia, she still annoyed the other residents by winning all the quizzes. As long as it wasnāt current events or āwhat I had for lunch todayāā¦
Thank you for your good wishes everybody - and glad to hear that your experiences with care homes for parents have been positive.
The one we chose seemed a lot nicer than many in the area, and is not the most expensive either!
Also I know two people that work for that care home group via my business networking, and I have done photography work for them, which also gives me confidence we have made a good choice.
Weāre renting a cottage just outside Liskeard, already got the Eden Project penciled in for a visit as Iāve wanted to go for ages. Iām really looking forward to the whole visit and exploring, but would welcome recommendations from your lady, thanks Chris.
Itās a recreation of a Classical Greek open air theatre perched on a cliff above the ocean. Itās also an interesting micro-climate ,when I visited I was surprised to find many succulents that Iād associated with S Africa.
Funnily enough, Iāve just booked the ferry from Roscoff and staying in Cornwall for a few nights as OH never been there. Eden project is first on the list of things to see.
I walked round the coast path back in 1977.
Iād forgotten about the Lost Gardens, itāll definitely go on the list and Iām sure I saw something about the Minack theater, but canāt quite remember, thanks DrMark.
