Any cheerful news today? (Nothing negative please! šŸ™‚) (Part 2)

I’ve been chuckling at OH and reminding him of the wallboard in our local UK Old Folks Home.. which changed appropriately… date, time, whatever…

eg: ā€œToday is Wednesday and the next meal is Lunchā€

We used to say that if we needed that sort of thing, we’d be really, really old…
Hmmm not so smug now…

I completely agree—I had forgotten about the ones I used to make all the time when I had a lot of mouths to feed

Chris Ryan"s latest book ā€˜Traitor’ is surprisingly still on Amazon Kindle UK for Ā£0.99p. I think that means he might have another one out soon. I prefer Andy McNab but he seems to have retired.

ā€˜Triple Crown’ horse racing thriller by Felix Francis has made a re-appearance at Ā£0.99p. He hasn’t made a bad job of following his father Dick Francis.

If I buy one, I have to halve it as too much in one go. I do prefer to buy ready roll pizza dough and again halve it to make one of my own choice of toppings for tea. Some doughs are good and some are bad but I found Super U own is my one of choice. Like you, I once had mouths to feed so used to make my own dough etc but now, living alone I can’t be bothered with all the hooha

That’s why I don’t eat pizza anymore, and I’m doing just fine :)!

Thanks for the tip about SuperU pizza dough Shiba. I will give it a try. Most Italian-style or Italian-origin food seems pretty good at SuperU.

I’ve shopped with SU for the past 37 years and have always returned, their own brands are better than the other supermarkets I have found for quality.

I do agree, and I appreciate their transparency about the origin of the ingredients.

One of the best days in years for me today. I picked up my new permanent resident EU family carte de sĆ©jour today. Having a permanent CdS helps psychologically ā€˜cement’ me even more to France. I’ve posted over on the Dangers of AI thread how this photo was subsequently subjected to ā€œAIā€™ā€ treatment.

Is there a George II?

Yesterday evening the valley was full of swallows, crowding together. Tonight there are none at all. They’ve migrated, and that’s a good thing.

Something I forgot to mention and have never ever seen anywhere in my life before is that Lidl are now doing floppy lettuces complete with all the roots and dirt just as you pull them up yourself. They come in an open plastic sleeve but they will keep fresher for longer with that root ball

They have also done bunched coriander which gives it a longer life.

UK or France? When we lived in France they hung around until early October.

I believe there have been six of them altogether starting in 1714, but only one is a member of Survive France.

France. When we were here last year the house martins second set of chicks had only fledged about now, but we’ve not really seen many martins this year.

I imagine you had many a Happy Hour watching them.

you are further North than we are… ours are still here (House Martins, hirondelle de fenĆŖtre) some swooping around their nests on the school buildings yesterday evening, some on the few existing overhead cables.

Barn Swallows (hirondelle rustique) are still about, but not in such numbers as in previous years. They normally vanish just before the others…

When they all vanish, we know to expect cooler weather. :crossed_fingers: possibly that applies to your area too..??

The weather had cooled over the last 2 weeks, so that could have been the trigger, particularly with the morning chill yesterday. I have assumed these were swallows from the fully forked tail feathers.

@Porridge TBH I’m not a birdwatcher, and although I noticed and enjoy nature around me, the hours available have been spent working on the bathroom. :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I’m not a swimmer, but what persuaded me when we stayed at an hotel in Zamora was the way the swallows swooped over your head if you swam in the pool.
