It looks as though I will be having an early birthday present so I can continue listening.
We have a 12 year old Pure Evoke Flow internet radio and can confirm that the Beeb is ceasing the stream for Pure in mid '23.
Our bedroom has a smaller cheaper Auna alarm internet radio and I havenāt heard the announcement on that ⦠yet! I havenāt heard back from them after I sent a message. It could be they support DASH, which is the streaming medium from the BBC
I contacted Roberts as a possible replacement radio for my Evoke and a kind lady there said that their (newer) internet radios wonāt be affected as they use the correct stream.
Itās possible that our Auna being newer will be OK, but the Evoke Flow wonāt be. Up here in Normandy it is possible to get FM Radio 4 on occasion, but unfortunately our Linkys box interferes with the reception (I guess not suppressed for radios) But Iāll be buying a Roberts and using my Evoke elsewhere. Hey ho!
That reminds me of when we designed a 2.4/5G 2x2 wireless ap/station box for Sky Italia. One of the commercial guys, looking at the prototype product complained that it wasnāt āsolidā enough. After internal discussions they asked us to put a 5mm steel plate inside the box under the PCB to make it heavier. We tried our best to explain what a bad idea puting a large thick steel plate right next to the internal wifi aerials was, but they didnāt listen. When testing the box, they decided to stack 10 of them on top of each other and complained about the range of the boxes. Idiots.
Snap. I have an internet radio by my bed, mainly for R4 and am worried that Iāll lose that facility. Donāt want to have to log into a laptop or tablet every time I want to listen and wonāt have the sleep and alarm functions.
I have one of these. I think you will find a new Roberts radio much better in every way.
Yes I think the Roberts brand in 2023 is far better from what I hear (pardon pun!) The Evoke Flow back in 2010 was equal quality, but theyāve been left behind. The customer service however has always been superb when trying to sort out reception issues. Just got to decide which model now, there is still some time before the cut off.
Thereā no need for you to use any standard form of computer.
Iāve already suggested using smart speakers as internet radios. Thereās no need to do anything other than request what radio station you want to listen to, or it can come on automatically at a time of your choosing.
Theyāre also cheaper than a specialised internet radio & perform many more functions.
I know absolutely nothing about internet radios, indeed would not have recognised the term if my son had not pointed out their Roberts years ago.
But now I am interested. Do the latest ones pick up any radio station via wifi, and, can they be set to switch off at a pre-determined time? Thus allowing suitable music to be played as one falls asleep at night?
If the answer to both is yes, then I am interested and will re-read this thread.

I have a couple of these. The sound quality is excellent. I think it will do everything you want.
I too have had the dire warnings from BBC on my little internet radio I play through my Hifi. So I am going to try Echo dot 3 gen and BBC Sounds. The Echo Dot 3rd gen is on sale at Amazon.fr for 17.99ā¬. I know everyone has fears re privacy etc, but Iāll give it a go at that price. But I may have to replace the bedside internet radio with taking my phone to bed, another retrograde step I knowā¦
I should add this needs a power cable. Iāve bought a 9.98⬠usb adaptor cable.
I have a Roberts Internet Radio and contacted Roberts for advice about the BBCās intention to switch off part of their streaming service. This is their replyā¦
"Thank you for your email.
The BBC are planning to switch off part of their Internet streaming during 2023. Unfortunately, there are a number of internet radios (all brands) that will be impacted by this decision. Some older Roberts products will be affected. The BBC has been making an audio announcement about this over the affected streaming services. Your radio may not be able to receive BBC stations over the Internet after the switch off. However, please note, that if you can receive a DAB signal, this will not change.
It is likely that your radio will be affected by the āShoutcastā switch off by the BBC, so Roberts are offering, as a goodwill gesture, 25% off any product available by a discount code exclusively available to affected customers from the Roberts Radio website upon request and submission of the old serial number.
There is no definite turn-off date for the service, and all these devices are usable as normal for FM, DAB and non-BBC Internet radio stations for the foreseeable future.
Kind regards,
Tia Harrison
Technical Adviser".
So far havenāt hear any announcements on the Axis - how often are they?
Following your recommendation to David_Spardo, Iāve ordered the Stream 94L to replace my old Stream 83i bought in 2013.
The prices are confusing though, donāt understand the price differences. From Roberts UK it costs Ā£199.99 but youād have to include delivery and import duty on top of that, but Roberts donāt deliver outside the UK. They have a French branch but it would cost 329 euros or thereabouts, free delivery if they have one ā not currently in stock.
From Amazon FR & DE is costs around 329 euros, if oneās available, low stock.
Best deal was from Amazon UK which, including delivery & import duty, comes to £204.08.
Disclaimer: I donāt know anything about Eric! Iād probably stick with Amazon, despite paying a little more.
Thanks for the thought, but Ericās radio is the Stream 94i - not the Stream 94L which is the smart enhanced version. And itās too late anyway - already ordered.
My previous model from 2013 has too many fiddly buttons on it, which always annoyed me. Time for a change, plus itās updated to the new āDashā technology.
My head is spinning with all this information. I have been backwards and forwards between Amazon UK and FR comparing info in , marginally, understandable language and the Roberts StreamL seems the one to go for, but I canāt see it listed on FR and in any case seems to be cheaper on UK, with delivery to France on the 26th of January. I would worry about hidden costs though such as handling charges re customs. I havenāt bought anything from the UK, other than Kindle books, since Brexit.
Before doing anything though Iāll go and look at that Lemega that @gregca recommended.
But first, let me tell you what my bottom line is. I need to play music at a restricted volume, not necessarily from the BBC, but definitely via wifi from my Livebox. Also, I see they have a sleep/snooze function. But I donāt need it as an alarm and in my experience snooze only lasts 10 minutes. I need to be able to set it to switch off, alarm or otherwise, after at least 30 minutes. Not sure from what I have read that this is possible. Also remote control if possible so I can put it on the other side of the room where the light can be hidden.
Now, off to check the Lemega.
Amazon UKās Roberts Radio Stream 94L is costing me Ā£204.08 including delivery and customs duties. I donāt think I will be paying anything on top of that. Havenāt before on other deliveries. It will arrive on 25th Jan.
I too like to drift off to sleep with the radio going, and switching off after as many minutes as you set. I set mine for 60 minutes (the max is 120 minutes) and always fall asleep before it switches off. And you set the volume as you would any radio.
Remote control - I donāt think there is one unless you buy the battery pack extra. Or maybe you could buy that as a separate item. Thereās an app you can download that works well as a remote control, but you donāt have a smartphone?
The light can be set to minimum dim, by you, and thereās hardly a glimmer at its lowest level. I think youād like this radio. The hardest part for me was setting it all up, and connecting it to the wifi. But I did.
Added edit - the information above is based on my old current Roberts radio and differs little from the new one I shall soon be receiving.
Thank you @Bonzocat, that is very useful. Just finished reading about the Lemega and am put off by several apparent problems with it and of course it is Chinese. Even if the Roberts is made in China, it is an English based company and I would hope better communications, something which seems to be a problem with Lemega. I suppose the price says it all.
I can manage without the remote but the main thing for me is the snooze, and 30 to 60 minutes would be ample for me. You are right, I do not have, and do not intend to have, a smart phone. Only just got my first smart tv, and that is not totally smart, give me a break.
I suppose you are certain that this model does not use Shoutcast, and is therefore safe from a switch off this year? Not that that would be vital for me, I only want it for music and plenty of choice elsewhere for that.
As far as connecting it up to wifi, yes, if not completely straightforward a problem for me. But I have a friend, the same one who got my tv to work without the ethernet cable.
