Roberts Radio contacted me to say that their radios no longer use ‘Shoutcast’ streaming technology, and use instead ‘Dash’ streaming technology, which the BBC will be using once they stop using ‘Shoutcast’.
Quote from SuePJ above - To be clear, the BBC isn’t switching off all of its internet radio services. It’s switching off a service called Shoutcast, which is used by a lot of older internet radios and some newer models too. The BBC will continue to use two other streaming standards called HLS and DASH.
The sleep time you set runs in 15-minute intervals - 15 to 120 minutes.
You can see below Amazon’s order summary for Stream 94L.
Import Fees Deposit - this is an estimate and there may well be an added extra, as you say, but you won’t know until you receive an email from Customs Duties asking you to pay it, if there is one. I hope Amazon is clued up on their estimates!
David_Spardo, you could wait to see if I get a Customs Duties added extra before ordering yours?
No, Amazon won’t charge you extra if it’s higher but will refund if it’s lower. I bought a camera lens from Amazon UK and, about six weeks later, I had the entire deposit refunded.
Yes, you are right, Amazon won’t apply any added extras in relation to Import Fees, but Customs Duties (Bureau de Douanement) might, if Amazon has estimated the Import Fees too low.
Why is everyone obsessing about the Roberts radio models? I agree they are quality but there are many decent alternatives at half the price. If you are buying to sort out the upcoming problem - BBC stopping their current Internet transmission format in mid 2023 - and you need a radio so send you off to sleep, does it need to be high fidelity? Maybe the main listening device you use needs to be a better sound but for most people I doubt they will notice the difference. A decent new radio with all the required functions can be purchased for less than 100 quid.
I suggest that buying something a lot cheaper may be a false economy and it could also be problematic with internet functionality. Personally I think Roberts are worth the money and will likely last decades providing excellent fidelity on speech and music. I agree that anyone on a tight budget could find something cheaper but I would no more buy a cheap radio than a cheap washing machine. To save money I would rather buy s/h or refurbished.
I currently have a Lidl SILVERCREST unit SRD 14A1 which has served me well for nearly 20 years, the sound quality is excellent. If I could upgrade the Firmware to support the BBC changes I would do it. Unfortunately I do not think that this is possible due to its age. I agree it is important not to buy tat but I also think that it is not always necessary to buy a ‘name’.
Sometimes, for me, it’s a matter of karma, if that’s the right word, feeling comfortable in one’s surroundings.
I bought a new electric kettle thinking it was a rust-red colour, but it was a shiny jet black when I opened the box, and I couldn’t cope with seeing it every morning. It was the elephant in the room. I didn’t exchange it because I couldn’t – it’s still in its box – and went shopping elsewhere to get me the rust-red one I felt happier & more comfortable with.
Same with the Roberts radio I suppose, even if it’s more expensive than other comparable cheaper makes.
Karma is more about events, actions (and consequences), perhaps you mean feng shui or perhaps just inner peace and you found the black version discordant in some way.
I used to think feng shui was a load of baloney, still do really, but if it exists our French retreat has it in spades - there is just something “right” about this house, despite the odd niggle (such as a flooded cellar) which I can’t put my finger on - but every time I visit I feel energised but calm, and I hate having to leave.
I think also that, if you’re hoping to keep using something for, say, at least 10 years, then the difference between 200 and 100 works out at a tenner a year. Is that tenner worthwhile for something which just works well, like a Roberts, compared to, eg, my cheap internet radio which is now in the bin?
Yep, that’s it. Or something like that. It’s not something I believe in, but do believe in that feeling of ‘it’s right for me’ and not discordant, as you say.
I don’t like my house but have gotten used to it, though I am still annoyed by the position of 3 light switches. I keep telling myself to reposition them but have done nothing about it for 30 years. They will always annoy me because they are not logically, in my mind, in the right place. Feng shui!
True, but personally I am not wedded to the BBC in this instance. There are other options on line to get me what I want.
One thing in particular I am going to investigate when it arrives (BTW @Bonzocat I’ve had an email saying delivery tomorrow, of course it could be spam) is the Spotify option. On the advice of my son some time ago he recommended it and I bought a trial subscription because I was very happy with my playlist but then I found out, and they confirmed, that there wasn’t a snooze function.
With this I am hoping there now will be.
My radio is due on the 25th Jan and is being delivered by UPS.
An email I received yesterday says the radio will be delivered today and is from a SPAM delivery company!
If you’ve had a confirmation email from Amazon for your order, you can check who’s delivering and when. You may also get periodic emails from Amazon about the progress of the delivery.
Click on ‘view order details’ in the ‘confirmation of order’ email, then when Amazon opens up click on ‘track package’ and that should give you info on who’s delivering and the date of delivery.
I’ve just checked on the delivery of my radio, via the Amazon website, and it is still in the UK, in Milton Keynes! But it will be here by the 25th, and possibly the day before, judging from past experience.
ps - it has just left the Amazon facility in Milton Keynes.
