Buying/selling used vehicles.....privately

You devil :imp:

Stella, I have long wondered why British people often do not understand the flexible approach French and many other nationalities take to laws. Just because it’s the law doesn’t mean you have to pay any attention to it. That’s part of the rich subtly of living here. Some laws matter, some don’t

I could (almost) write a book about the times I have been asked for help, because someone has overlooked, ignored or down-right flouted the Law… here in France…

But, I must admit, this means that my life is never dull… :sunglasses::hugs::zipper_mouth_face:

I really don’t see the problem with selling a vehicle to a willing buyer who knowingly accepts that it doesn’t have a CT with 18 months to run or more.

:sunglasses: As with so many things in life… folk are happy to think there is no problem… until there IS a problem… and that is when the “fun” starts…:laughing:

Why are you commenting on my reply. I was not replying to you, I was just pointing out that if anybody was interested in the law, it is very simple to understand. I’m sorry that you don’t understand English usage.

Oh dear God, if my teenagers were behaving like this, I’d confiscate their devices…

Bit late to the party but since I’ve bought and sold vehicles in France, here’s my 2 cents.

1: It depends on gut feeling to be honest, the CT is quite comprehensive, but if you think it’s dodgy, have it re-done somewhere else. Of course, when you haven’t bought it yet, you may have to arrange something to get a 2nd opinion elsewhere. This then depends on the sellers’ willingness to do so. For best results when buying: test drive, and bring a friend along who can look at all the bits and bobs and give you a verdict on whether or not “it is good”.

2: As far as I know, there’s no recourses whatsoever. No warranty, no guarantees. Your only responsibility is to fill out a declaration de cession during the sale and make sure the car is de-registered at ANTS so the new owner can register it.

3: I don’t think it’s done here to the spic and span extent, people will wash their cars and vacuum them but that’s about it - personally when I sold one of my cars I just took it for a wash/vacuum, and made sure I took out all the random cruft that tends to collect in one. So that seems to be the common way of going about it here. I guess it depends on what you’re selling, if it’s a 20 year old banger or a more recent executive style vehicle.

2 cents delivered!

Until the day you are in trouble I wouldn’t try the ‘It’s not one of the laws that matters’ line to anyone in authority

Maybe I haven’t explained myself too well Nellie. The art of knowing which laws matter and which don’t is a very subtle one. For example, I wouldn’t even have one pint and get behind the wheel in the UK but I’m comfortable having a couple of glasses of wine over lunch here and driving home. I tend to adhere to the letter of the law in the UK but my interpretation of the law here is more nuanced

Perfect response; valuable advice. Thank you very much, Ben.

I agree, Patricia; this is my first “exposure” to the attitudes of a minority on this forum and I am very surprised! Will leave it at that in case you confiscate my device!

Please put a photograph of yourself on your profile in accordance with site etiquette. Thank you!

Sure will, Véronique; where can I find the site’s etiquette requirements so I can make sure I comply, please?

The ultimate sanction, device confiscation :fearful: A modern day version of being sent to Coventry. I think OAPs can be as naughty as teenagers, maybe even worse. Well I hope so anyway. Being all grown up can be so boring. We spend decades being sensible and holding down “important” jobs and positions in society, raising children etc. We deserve to be rascals every now and then in our dotage. :smiling_imp:

They are around somewhere, possibly on the first page? But it boils down to “dinner party rules” and having a picture of yourself and a real name - that’s it really  @Stella might tell you even more , she deals with admin as I and various others do
