Computer stuff…..what is going on…..?

No idea, sorry!

The UK convention is single quotation marks for quoting text and double ones for direct speech, whereas the US one is double quotation marks for both.

I’ve written book chapters for US and HK publishers (think that gig may be over!) where I’ve had to use the latter format - don’t like it. One encounters a load of other crap too when it comes to different US publishers’ reference formats - inline, footnote/endnote, Harvard, Chicago etc.

Thank God, I’ve never had to get my head around the traversty of Americanism. I’ve only had to write in British English (rarely, and mostly translate from French). And in French, never had to use direct speech on any published works, my works are based on technical studies and the future of BIM,(building information modeling) and future standardisation in the building industry.
Not up to your level Mark, I’ve only participated in my field of expertise had a few pages published each time.

Thanks, but a quick glance suggests it’s way beyond me!

Computer spring cleaning - got piles of old programme CDs like these - going back years. And other ordinary CDs. They are of no use. Current computer can’t read them, and I hate wasting anything - is the decheterie the best place to take them?

They do make good bird scarers to protect fruit trees or other produce. You may find people who would take them off your hands for that purpose.

You might well have difficulty installing them on modern hardware anyway.

I doubt they are worth keeping, though that copy of Photoshop might still be up to light editing tasks and won’t charge you rent.

Though you could invest in a USB CD drive and make images (which can then be used with a virtual CD drive) if you feel there is anything you might make use of.

Neither programme will install – Windows 11 incompatible – but am sure they’ll install on a Windows 98 computer if any of those are still around and in use.

I do have an old Windows 98 laptop somewhere, but I suspect that will be discarded likewise when I find it!

Photoshop would probably run on a simulated earlier windows environment - IIRC you can set that up in Windows.

Not much use IIRC - I don;t think the “Limited Edition” of PS 5 did layers, it was pretty basic.

It doesn’t actually say it is the limited edition - but it is older than I thought. I found an unopened copy for MacOS online and squinting carefully at the photos it appears to say “Copyright 1998”; it’s probably academic whether it does layers because I doubt you’d get it running to find out.

It does in the photo that Bonzocat uploaded:=

ETA: I’m wrong about layers - it does do those, but it can’t work in CMYK - probably not such a big deal for hobbyists.

But it is almost 20 years old at this point so debatable whether it’s worth setting up an ancient OS just to run it.

Oops, missed that

I think I might still have a W98 box tucked away somewhere (probably wouldn’t start now, caps on the mobo will have gone) that could have run it. I kept the old machine for playing mech warrior, but haven’t gamed for nearly 20 years.

If, for some unholy reason, I needed to spin up a copy of Windows 98 I would use a virtual machine.

And I would keep it well away from the internet.

I imagine it would work quite well for invoking Demons from the Uttermost Pit.

Unfortunately Microsoft stopped supporting drivers for “Demons from the Uttermost Pit” in W95

They’re no fun any more. No wonder people use Linux - it has daemons built in.

At the British Library they have a large room full of old computers just in case they need to access old records etc, none can be connected to the network for fear of losing or corrupting the data.

I’ve run into this problem with my Epson printer. It works perfectly on a Windows 7 home-made PC but the installation disc doesn’t play with my Windows 11 laptop – says it’s installing, but doesn’t. The download from the Epson site doesn’t have the option of borderless printing, which I need.

Ordered a new Epson printer to solve the problem but the delivery company seems to have lost it. Progress indeed!
