You are correct. However, there is a major difference between destroying our supporting ecosystem through arrogance, ignorance & greed, & the inevitable absorbing of the plant by our sun.
The current crisis management is to prevent us all committing suicide.
It’s global capitalism so every corner of the world needs to reduce consumption not just the West.
Loads of brands of solid toothpaste now. In every bio shop…
And yes it’s for governments to take the big actions. But they won’t if they don’t think people care. So your small consumer actions can add up to make a difference.
Just to clarify. I’m not advocating doing nothing, or subscribe to the playground argument that ’ he’s not doing anything, so why should I ’ that is prevalent amongst some. I’m just being realistic, and truthful. And mass extinctions have nothing to do with the Sun swallowing the Earth, that will take about another 4-5 billion years when the Sun goes red giant. Mass extinctions are a fact of life. What is different about the current one is that it’s entirely species made and not a natural catastrophy.
Quite! The purpose of this thread, started by Porridge. There is a lot we can do to contribute individually.
What we do about it on a global scale is infuriating and complex, but there are some very able people out there who have a variety of answers that make sense, but who are not being listened to by those in power who can make a difference.
I hope a simple fundamental framework can be created into which meaningful actions can be proposed, prioritised and actioned with public support. But that will be a monumental task, because the problem is so unprecedented.
What has to be done may be impossible but it must begin with those 20 leading nations meeting, recognising and cooperating with each other to achieve something real and meaningful.
But being a confirmed cynic – it’s too bloody late - I doubt if any competence and real leadership will emerge.
We will see!
Personally I think humanity will survive more-or-less whatever happens. Extinction (of humanity) is not my fear. We are very widespread and adaptable as a species - somewhere groups of us are likely to survive almost any level of breakdown.
Rather, it’s civilisation I fear for - the continuous histories we have, the accumulated and shared knowledge, diverse cultures, communications, education - and, in many places, relatively easy and stable lives. And most of all, our potential - the capacity I do believe we have to actually provide a decent life for everybody, and to continue the advance of our collective knowledge.
But…
- The most wealthy and wasteful need to make the biggest reductions, and
- We mustn’t use the failure to act of others as an excuse not to act ourselves.
Well, you may very well be correct. If this happens, then after how ever many of centuries or millennia it takes humanity to recover, I wonder what will happen second time around. Will human nature just make history repeat itself, or will it be forewarned is forearmed ?
Which country has the most billionaires Geof?
There is a proposal along those lines, but in proportion to relative wealth.
Those that consume the most give up the most, those that consume the least give up but give up the least and gradually consume more, so that in time all is equal and balanced.
Gonna take a long time!
Looks like mine will continue to come from a tube then.
Bio shops! Put the word Bio on a product and licence to double the price. I was always told to look after the pennies and, well you know the rest!
As for whatever nasties there might be in toothpaste that might kill the oceans inhabitants then I doubt our fosse system contributes to that.
More a case of what the UK and other countries pump out into open sea untreated that is the problem.
What oils do you use instead?
Not sure that the new regime for household waste in our area of France is a step forward or back.
We had bins within walking distance of our house but now they are placed at various points around the area and in the centre of the commune village.
Instead of 1 lorry collecting each week or so we now have many individuals driving back and forth with car loads of rubbish. How much more pollution is that making?
Successive generations since the start of the industrial revolution have messed up the eco system and it would take twice that time to reverse the situation but other than the save the planet samaritans who enjoy standing on a soapbox and preach doom and gloom the vast majority follow human nature and put themselves before others.
Listening to the soundbites of Boris and other politicians while the current round of green meetings is happening makes me smile. Do you really think that they believe what they preach?
Olive oil, also coconut, Butter and lard. Pretty much in that order of preference.
I think you’ve spent too long watching Doctor Who…

My solid toothpastes, shampoo, and conditioner all last much longer than the conventional ones. I don’t like to waste money so have monitored this to be sure.
I’m really trying to keep my home and half acre of land as chemical free as possible…

I used to colour my hair several times a year but haven’t done so since April 2020 and have been trying to decide whether or not I like the silver appearing in my roots which are now below my ears….I’m not sure yet…
My Scottish gran had white hair quite early and then tried the purple rinse which she didn’t like either and most of my memories of her are with white hair and startling blue eyes and a soft Scottish lilt to her voice that I still hear in my mind’s eye to this day when I think of her
Bicarbonate of soda is a good toothpaste.
