I saw it last night on the news, it was quite a fire.
…is a dangerous word.
Even if it was an EV fire, the spread will have been rapid due to the petrol in the other cars.
Physically undamaged EV batteries do not catch fire from external heat sources (unlike fuel tanks), but can burn due to internal faults or short circuits, which can be caused by manufacturing faults or external factors (euphemism for a crash).
Put enough heat in a confined space and anything will burn.
So don’t blame the potential culprit, blame the victims🤔
I feel sorry for the poor holidaymakers coming back to find their cars in this.

Bet they will be wishing they left their cars with one of those risky park and pay outfits that take them joyriding.
If an EV is found to have been the cause, its going to create a lot of trouble for the industry and people will have no confidence in buying one let alone parking near one or even in their garage. We have to wait and find out what the experts discover was the cause. Looks a pretty ropey construction too.
It might gve the ferry companies and even the tunnel pause for thought.
But, I stress, we don’t know an EV was the cause.
Not at all, just pointing out that carrying around many litres of highly volatile liquid & then parking many similar fire risks together in a small space isn’t the “safe” option that the EV haters seem to think it is.
Having seen a destruction test done on an EV battery it’s fairly evident that a fire wouldn’t spread through a car park of EVs in the same way. Well, not because of the batteries - I can’t vouch for the other bits, but those are the same as ICE vehicles anyway.
Is the fire still burning? If not it wasnt an EV.
Sky news,
Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer at Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said it most likely started in a diesel car and not an EV.
Weird as isn’t it quite hard to ignite diesel?
Nearly as hard as a battery ![]()
The problems is that lithium battery fires do not need an external source of oxygen - so, once started, they are very hard to put out.
Most likely an electrical fire IF it was a diesel vehicle, perhaps even arson? Yes, diesel fuel isn’t easy to ignite like petrol.
So it would still be burning ![]()
They said there were a lot of EV, petrol and diesel cars involved and due to the number of EV’s that might be involved fought the fire defensively and externally for firefighter safety reasons.
Maybe.
Was it the range rover?
More than possible but I’d wait for the investigation.
Mind you, I’d argue that it doesn’t actually matter if EV’s do not really catch fire any more readily than ICE vehicles. What matters is the perception that they do.
Depending on one’s internal bias or if they read the Sun.
I believe there’s pressure growing to ban diesels from car ferries. I’m certainly concerned about parking my EV next to one ![]()
