I read that article earlier but didn’t really understand it. "We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’” Are exit visas on the way?
I note Gaza has calmed down (thank goodness) just in time (actually just too late it would appear) for Trump to get the Noble Peace Prize. Forget the 18,487 Palestinian children murdered by Israel, when there’s a chance of a Peace Prize going Trump gets his fat arse in gear.
Yes I fear this is the entire motivation behind the whole thing - Obama got one so Dumb-Ass Donnie has to have one too.
No doubt he said to Bibi “lay off the Palestinians for a bit until I’ve got my gong, and then I’ll resupply you with tanks and F-16s so you can finish the job”.
Netanyahu has pretty much accomplished the destruction of the Gaza Strip as a functioning entity in any case, not much point in using any more tank rounds.
Let’s hope the Nobel Prize Committee are nordically incorruptible.
I actually met Pam Bondi a couple times in her previous role as AG of Florida. She grew up in Tampa and was rumoured during her time both before and during her AG stint for being someone who may or may not have very much enjoyed the hospitality of various unsavoury groups around the area who did a good line in brown envelopes, one of which may or may not have come from a Mr Trump when her office was considering charges against him and his Trump University scam a decade or so ago. Unlike a lot of the Trump circle who are either religious fanatics or just hateful, evil people (Stephen Miller etc), I have always just assumed Bondi primarily worships the almighty dollar.
I just had a quick read about the Nobel Peace Prize committee process and it seems that you have to be nominated by 1st February for consideration in early October. Apparently a spokeswoman has said he’s be furious if he isn’t awarded it on Friday. And there’s a headline in the Guardian that says Norway is bracing for Trump’s reaction if he doesn’t win.
Well he’s got to wait at least another year then. On 1st February he had only been President for 11 days, so unless he got awarded it in the categories of “Best comb-over hairstyle worn by a mainstream politician” or “most repellent social media rant” he hadn’t had time to achieve anything…
Even if this cease fire sticks, which we all hope, I’m not sure that it will cancel out the blowing random fishing boats out of the water, attacking US cities, bombing other countries…etc etc.
I realise that Tim, and who knows what other demands over and above the four freedoms will be demanded, adopting the euro for example. And of course the good old rebate is gone too.
I don’t know what is possible but I do know that Britain and the EU are stronger together and the historical UK contribution (albeit stroppy on occasion) has been appreciated (sometimes begrudgingly) by many in Brussels and in Paris, Berlin and other sensible capitals. The direction for further integration should be set now and progress made incrementally.
As we see, populism, well let’s face it, fascism, is on the rise in the EU and even the US, we need to stand together against it. The UK is better in the tent pissing out and any UK politician (or indeed voter with an IQ above 50) that can’t see that, deserves everything they get. Sadly the “into the valley of death” brigade will drag the 48% remainers with them.
It’s time to get rid of “mister please all of the people all of the time” Starmer (apart from legitimate protesters) and get someone with balls and conviction in. Counter phisologically, I think Angela Rainer has more balls than Starmer has
If I was a senior exec of a company, and at the annual kick off meeting the CEO bullshitted as he did last week I’d be out of there like poo off a hot shovel. No plan, no direction, nothing concrete at all. Fingers crossed and hope for the best isn’t a strategy.
Nothing - nor Sweden for that matter - the Nobel Prize organisation is based in Norway.
From Wikipedia:
It is also unclear why Nobel wished the Peace Prize to be administered in Norway, which was ruled in union with Sweden at the time of Nobel’s death. The Norwegian Nobel Committee speculates that Nobel may have considered Norway better suited to awarding the prize, as it did not have the same militaristic traditions as Sweden.
I have a bit more faith in Keir Starmer than you do, but I really wish he would adopt a proper pro-EU stance (and set out a road-map for rejoining, or at minimum SIngle Market membership) - and also appoint someone to beef up Labour’s comms. I think there is a lot of good work going on in many areas, but we don’t get to hear about it. And Starmer needs to stamp on Farrago’s nonsense and explain in crystal clear terms to the Goldfish (new name for the British electorate ) where the blame for the current economic situation lies - with those who backed Brexit, lied about its impact, and who refuse to accept responsibility for its consequences.
Agree about Angela Rayner too - it’s a shame she shot herself in the foot politically, I thought she was smarter than that.
But equally I agree with those who have commented that the UK getting back in the EU may not happen in my lifetime.
It would be a travesty if Trump were awarded the Nobel Prize he craves. He wants this so aggressively because one was awarded to President Obama. For Trump everything is a personal competition. It’s psychotic.
Frankly, I cannot see why the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded to an individual, to take home and forever display on his mantelpiece for all to genuflect, when the power and might of America the country is what has forced Israel and Hamas into an end, however temporary, of hostilities. If an award is to be made at all, it should be to US presidential power.
Well, we’ll find out at 10h French time today. I don’t think he deserves it but I feel sorry for the Norwegians because he’ll blame them. Extra tariffs for Norway?
