Norway has pretty solid air defenses - NASMS. I hope they have them turned on and looking for threats.

The list for this year’s prize has already closed, so not this year.

At the end of January, I know. Some people still think a nomination could count or that he could have an honorary prize. I agree that it would be better to wait for next year and see if the ā€˜everlasting’ peace holds.

Fwiw, there’s a poll in the Times today with nearly 17,000 votes and over 80% didn’t think it would hold.

The Mail has outmailed itself today. Do those journalists believe in their work or are they just told what to write?

Interestingly, it seems the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway by a Norwegian committee but the other Nobel Prizes are awarded by a Swedish committee in Sweden.

And Trump didn’t win :tada::sparkler:

I’m sure it was just an oversight. Didn’t something like this happen with the Oscars years ago?

100% tariff on Norwegian blues.

Who won the Nobel Peace Prize this year will have been decided ages ago.

However … if Trump has permanently severed the link between the US and Israel, or at least stood up to Israel in a way that none of his immediate predecessors did, and brought peace to the region (even a peace which doesn’t look like I’d want it to), I’m inclined to think that is worthy of the Prize.

I mean, it’s only because he’s so odious that we resent his winning it, isn’t it?

Yes. We really don’t want to encourage him to keep going down the fascist path, do we?

There’s a really good opinion piece in the NYTimes today by Tom Friedman. One point he was trying to make was this is great news (the Gaza deal), but why not, Mr Trump, have a deal with the Democrats. Call them to Camp David and make peace in your own country?

He had some help.

Would that get him the Nobel Prize?

Given that Trump enabled Netanyahu’s flattening of Gaza - the Israelis would not have dared to to what they did without tacit US approval - I don;t see how Trump deserves any credit whatsoever for halting the conflict at this point.

The Israelis have agreed to a ceasefire because they have achieved their military objectives and see a prospect of getting their hostages back. Hamas have agreed because otherwise the slaughter and destruction would continue.

Yes Hamas triggered the current situation with their attack on Israel two years ago, but the retribution has been disproportionate, and Israel has failed to engage in any meaningful way with the Palestinians in recent years, while continuing to allow Jewish settlement to encroach on the West Bank.

The whole thing is a mess that goes back to 1948 and beyond, but continuing violence provides no solution nor does it achieve any sort of long term peace and stability.

Trump has simply been doing his usual wheeler-dealing and flip-flopping depending on which adviser spoke to him last. He prides himself on his ā€œdeal making skillsā€ but he is also incredibly lazy, I’m sure other people did the lion’s share of the legwork on this current ā€œdealā€.

But I am not optimistic - we have been here before more than once - right back to the Camp David ā€œaccordsā€ in 1978.

Maybe not, but he could give himself the (now worthless) Presidential Medal of Freedom.

I’m not optimistic at all of it lasting, I can see an alleged ā€˜attack’ supposedly by Hamas, being the excuse to start again whilst claiming it’s not their fault.

LOL true

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded solely for a person and/or organisation that works tirelessly for the good of others and in the name of peace. Trump is only doing what he’s doing because he wants the prize because Obama got it and that in itself should rule him out.
I thought it was amusing that Zelensky said that if Trump could stop the war with Russia and bring peace to the region he’d nominate him for the prize. I think only Trump really believes he could get it because he’s seriously deluded about his own abilities and how people see him.

As an extra comment, what do you think would happen in Palestine and/or Ukraine if Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ? I expect he’d very quickly lose all interest and it would all go to shit again, and he wouldn’t care.

Abso-bloomin’-lutely. He’d be on to the next thing - probably expecting an Oscar and a couple of BAFTAs…
