Hi Janet, not everyone is over keen on Gimp, it is not the best bedfellow for inkscape I have found.
It all depends what you need to do, I guess. Let's be honest specialist apps such as IN Design are super clean, A photographer wouldn't dream of using anything other than Photoshop. What I do, is for the screen not print, so I am quite happy with Picassa, the Magic Wand in iweb ( for clearing backgrounds ) Preview etc.
You are quite right the YouTube tuts are brilliant, in the main, it's finding time to view and practise is the issue. That Avery or Avary ( I' ll check ) seems a wonderful tool for complex layers, cut outs etc. Be back soon

MIGHTY DEALS and designrfix. Even if you are putting together a mini site/email mailer/newsletter for a kids playgroup or Fete or whatever, as time is of the essence for most folks/ here you can save time and money. I prefer to hand draw my own logos and icons, but if I have to do a quicky for a neighbour or a charity these sites and freebees are invaluable. I have built up a sizeable library of freebies that I can tap into at any time. ENJOY
