Gite guests, Netflix and Prime, what's the procedure?

We have Netflix and Prime on the Smart TV in our gite. We also have both in our house and OH purchased 3 Netflix licenses ages ago and has been paying for them ever since.

The latest (UK) guests who have just left signed out of our accounts in the gite and (presumably) used their own accounts for the duration. They had the courtesy to sign out of theirs before they left.

OH wants our guests to use our accounts because then we don’t have to go through the faff of signing back in again, which now entails more security, requiring phone or laptop and not just the TV.

I thought our guests were correct in using their own account. Or is OH right and they can use our account?

Grateful for some clarity here. Thanks.

I’ve not stayed in a gite but I have used AirBnB many, many times. Each property has always, without fail, required me to use my own account if I want to watch Netflix, Prime, YouTube, Apple+, etc… To be honest, I’m completely comfortable with that.

I expect a Smart TV to be available so I can use the built-in apps and don’t have to hook up my work laptop, but that’s as far as it goes for me. I don’t think I’d use anyone else’s credentials even if it was logged in.

If it were me as a guest, I would prefer to use my own account, with my own favourites and watchlists. Though in reality, I rarely watch TV when on holiday.

The issue may be that if they are logged in on your account they can make purchases?

While it is clearly an added benefit for those who don’t have a specific streamer at home to have them supplied, your experience has always been mine too. “We’ve got the TV and apps, you’re welcome to sign into your own account if you don’t want to watch TNT (or whatever).” If I have my own account I’d have it set up with everything I want, that film I’ve never got around to watching, what episode of Billions I’m up to etc etc too, so would probably want to log in to my own account anyway.

What if the kids watched something unsuitable on your account? Best to have them use their own. (Not that I have ever managed this yet on our own smart TV let alone one elsewhere!)

We don’t have kids in our gite. But why would that matter?

Also, I’m not sure there is anything “unsuitable” on Netflix or Amazon. Trite, badly written, appalling acted, unnecessarily violent (especially to women) maybe but “unsuitable” I think not.

We have dumb TVs / Sat boxes that have their menus locked to prevent guest techno-shenanigans.

If they want to steam Neflix/Prime/Hulu on laptops or tablets, that’s what the WiFi is for.

You are responsible for your wifi/streaming packages. So any viewing of pornography or downloading stuff is down to you. We have a clause in our contract that they mustn’t but I doubt it would have any effect if we were challenged,

OK Jane, I understand, but I’m only talking about Netflix and Prime. I’m not aware they have any porn.

You’ve got me thinking while I’m having a cup of tea and I realise I really don’t understand. Surely I can’t stop anyone downloading porn or whatever onto their own laptops / tablets / phones while they are staying in our cottage. How can I be responsible for their behaviour?
And all I am providing is a Smart TV that has Netflix, Prime, Molotov, YouTube, etc already pre-installed. Surely those are just streaming services? Can someone download anything onto our SmartTV?
If they find a porn streaming channel how can I be responsible for their behaviour anymore than I am responsible if they choose to watch The Crown?

If you provide WiFi or Ethernet, then you are responsible for what traffic is downloaded.

Fine, is “normal” porn illegal?

In fact many hotels provide their guests with “adult” channels. Is there one rule for them and another for gites?

This is France, porn is NOT illegal, but downloading copyrighted material is, music, films, software, etc.

Haha a techie friend hacked into a hotel service and swapped all the rooms watching porn to the Disney channel :joy:

Funily, no one phoned concierge to complain :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

5* Hotels obligingly list these as ‘Documentaries’ in case the bill is being covered by company travel.

The company accountant always knows!

@SuePJ Is your Netflix account France based?
Our daughter often asks if we have seen this or that on Netflix and as hers is UK registered and ours is French sone stuff available on UK Netflix is not avialable on ours.
Could you guests have logged out of your Netflix and into theirs for this reason?
