Was that not Maureen Lipman in a BT advert sometime in the late 90s?
This is really making me laugh
Iāve got several āsnood type neck muffsā that donāt match anything but can be pulled up over my head and several ādoctor whoā scarves that can snuggle my neck 3 times round and still be dangling below my nether regions
Then I have a wonderful snuggly soft shawl type thing that I can drape round my neck and crossover my chest under my hoodieā¦
My pupster woke me up at 4 am this morning so I tried to pretend I was still fast asleepā¦10 minutes later though as he knew I wasnāt asleep I was up and dressed in fleecy jogging bottomsā¦vest top(base layer whatever the weather) heavy weight but dilapidated old hoodieā¦thermal socks and fluffy slippers and as I approached the back door with my flashlight bracing myself for the 4% according to my phone I slung on an equally dilapidated but gloriously warm wool cardiganā¦.
I thought well ok itās 4 degrees then Iām going to fire up all the butane gas heaters for a bitā¦.
We played ball in the house and āwhereās the squeaky bone toyā and āfind the chewā and by 5.30 they were all chilled out and snoozing again
I thought briefly about grabbing another hour of sleep but by then I was wide awake with a mug of ricore waiting for sunriseā¦.
Apart from my hands I was well warm and didnāt turn the heaters on lol
I have a loose knit fishermanās jumper that I only put on if chilly after swimming in the pond. Not immediately, I am usually warm from the transfer from cold water to warmer air but after an hour or so sedentary in the house I feel the chill a bit. That jumper is just the thing, so cosy.
Not got into the woolly scarf drawer yet.
Daughter sent me lots of different cotton scarves a few years back⦠and now theyāre finally coming into their ownā¦
(must confess, I do have a couple (at least) which might have been knitted especially for Dr Whoā¦
)
According to several sources its worth taking a warm shower afterwards as it places the opposite stress to cold on the body producing health benefits.
It is from the particulates. We donāt have the best of designs for my asthma, as it is a front opening door,
chosen by OH.
My doctor said that if we didnāt use it, unless in case of emergency ie. loss of electricity, it would help and it certainly does, as my winter chest infections have dropped dramatically.
Because of work duties I own a particulates monitor so will test ours when next there and friends fires as well. Yes the door opening does seem to be responsible for an increase. Looking at adding an opening in the baffle plate that I will use before opening the door to try and reduce in that circumstance.
Thanks for getting back to me.
Iām sure I read somewhere in the bumpf for our logburner (years ago) ⦠the advice to increase the airflow for a few moments, before (and while) opening the door to either āfidgetā or add more wood.
Does this seem reasonable ⦠I find myself doing it, but Iām not sure whyā¦
Yes Stella, that is something I have read on more than one stove instruction book. I have also noted that many simply are not well constructed to achieve this well. The slight pressure in the stove through burning and expansion of the air is negated by the action of opening the door sucking a little puff of smoke into the room.
My thought is to open a hole equal in diameter to the flue so opening the door has no effect. I have noticed if you just open the door a little at first air from the room is drawn in and the fire burn seems to increase a little then opening the door a bit slower certainly helps.
With my logburner, thatās easily sorted. I shall fling the 2 vents wide open (2 x demi-lune) and watch gleefully as the fire goes mad⦠then carefully open the door and do my whateverā¦
Please feed back how that goes.
Ironically, when I first finished constructing and filling my pond it was in November more than 15 years ago I think. I decided that I wasnāt going to wait for Spring to initiate it so cleared a path down from it with all doors into and through the house to the shower which was ready for my expected mad dash. In the event, the water was so cold in comparison to the air that I emerged into, that I didnāt bother with the shower at all. So here I am after all these years taking twice daily swims in November again. Perhaps the really warm jumper does the same as the shower, but an hour or so later.

Good on you! It is apparently the rapid drop and increase that has the effect rather than the thawing outš

Just thinking about that gives me instant hypothermia ![]()
I do like the sound of your cosy fishermanās jumper though ![]()

Look again, sportspeople have been using cold immersion therapy for years and plenty of info around. The latest fad being the Wim Hoff technique.
I have read on more than one stove instruction book
Also advocated in āNorwegian Woodā, my fire bible.
Yes Iāve actually been trying out the Wimhoff breathingā¦I was quite surprised at how long I could hold my breath for both inhalation and exhalation and how fast the minutes passedā¦.
Yes Iāve seen people swimming in lakes with ice and in minus temperatures in the seaā¦brave soulsā¦
But Iāve got no interest in taking it any further atm than just his breathing techniquesā¦
On a plus side my feet are definitely improved with quercitin but I scraped two of my knuckles outside today without realising how I did it and they were bleeding profusely as I came back inside and are causing an irritation tonightā¦.
(I dislocated/broke a finger on my dominant hand many years ago and have no movement in it beyond my palm and canāt form a fistā¦.itās a small inconsequential thing compared to what many people go through and I donāt dwell on it but drops in temperature along with raynaudās really affect me and actually annoy me that after all these years Iāve still not conquered itā¦.)

Yes I am guranteed 2.5 minutes of peace and quiet in our house when O/H is doing it.![]()

Been taking cold and hot showers alternating between the 2 for a while but there is no way I am entering the sea around the south coast of Britain with all that they discharge. Had to tell O/H to get out after spotting a foaming cloud in the water off Whitstable.
