If we don't move (see previous post): Pet Passport question

Is the clampvdown on non resident pet passports actually happening? Haa anybody been challenged?

The 4 month limit on UK animal travel certificates makes our usual application for a 6 month visa a waste of time..

So our options are to sell up, move to France or just come for 3 months.

With the latter we would rent our house as a holiday let.

To that end can anyone recommend an agency who do such let’s paying the rent into a UK bank account?

We have used Air BnB in the past and a local agent in The Herault.

I understand that it is perhaps more difficult to do this under the radar these days

What are people’s experiences?

It is near impossible do holiday rentals under the radar these days. The platforms like AirBnB are now required to inform the fisc of your income, and you will need to register at your marie. Lots of other details for renting now too.

If you’re planning to use your house yourself in peak season (june-Sept) then research what the occupancy rate is in your area as you may find there is surplus supply and little demand outside that period.

Good.

Agreed, I don’t know which idiot came up with that idea either. So the pet passport is the best option.

But i read that they were beginning g to refuse pet passports being used by non residents

From April 22nd 2026 EU issued pet passports will not be allowed to be used by non EU residents for entry of their pets into the EU. Whether France actually enforces this is another matter, but you risk being turned back if they do.

Hmmm… It certainly states things quite clearly… here’s an important extract

Have you read this? Owners from Great Britain travelling to EU warned over pet passport ‘dodge’ | Pets | The Guardian

Yes, @pete_thomas . That is what the eu link (further up the thread) is all about.

I have highlighted the relevant bits.

Any animal spending more than 3 months in France should be registered with ICAD - at which point it’s eligible for a passport - although most vets insist on A 3 month gap. Ideally they’re registered within 2 weeks of arrival

A lot of vets simply require you register with them on arrival - tell them your on a visa and spending more than 3 months- 3 months later they should issue the passport.

Read ICAD and the Importing animals section on gouv fr.

The link is confusing because it also states - “Any correct documentation issued before the April 2026 deadline remains valid for the lifetime of your pet, provided its identification (microchip) remains the same.”

I’ve checked the DEFRA, Eurotunnel and P & O Ferries websites and none of them mention the upcoming changes but I have seen a Facebook page stating that this has already been postponed to September.

In true Etias style probably for the next year and year after that. Bureaucratic rubbish really, so the current AHC/pet passport system isn’t working because we need a new one to prevent the puppy farming/smuggling operation. However the miracle that is digital will change it, presumably they will want a facial picture of the pet together with paw prints :joy:. Fortunately nothing digital has been hacked so everyone can sleep soundly.

When we took our 2 dogs to the vets in February 2026, we needed to renew one of their passports, we had to show our Carte de Séjour card (French residency card) and the chip was checked to see if it was registered with ICAD. The vet informed us that they would be fined if they issued a pet passport to a non resident now

Bit confused, what do you mean by “renew” as a PP is normally for life?

It was a Romanian passport and unfortunately we had used up all the spaces for showing the injections, so although you get it for life once you have used the spaces for the vet to record the injections you need to renew it

Understand, thank you.

Bonjour, new on here….

I have been following the discussion on Pet Passports. I got my first info on this from The Guardian.

I am a resident of both UK and France, tax resident UK, dual nationality therefore EU citizen, EU passport holder. French property owner since 2008.

My dog has a Frenchpassport issued 2021 on my French address and with French rabies immunisation since 2022.

I fully intend to use this again on my next trip from UK to France.

I think it’s a fair bet, and I can talk the hind leg off a donkey….done it before…

Welcome Yann, Be interested to hear how you get on, its not supposed to commence until the 22nd. With your EU passport I would be surprised if they take much notice.
