It was very warm overnight and a priority is to fit window screens. I was wondering what solutions have been used by SF members for similar windows.
The large doorway screen that was fitted is rubbish.
We got ours from AvosDim made to measure. Easy to install.
Interestingly, when it’s hot overnight the last thing on earth we do is leave windows open (so screens not needed). For the last two weeks we have been closing everything down. The only time the house is open is at 6-7am.
FWIW, the advice I’ve read is to open windows at night but close them during the day.
But I guess it depends on the house and how hot the outside air is at night in comparison to inside - if you have a nice old stone house that keeps the interior reasonably cool, then letting in warmer outside air is counterproductive, but in a modern shed then nighttime outside air may be cooler.
Often the temperature falls below the interior temperature. We do have the option of using aircon if it’s still very warm outside but for evironmental and cost reasons prefer not to.
Temps inside the modern bungalow are around 10 degs below outside temp. Not as good as a stone house with high thermal mass but hopefully warmer in winter.
For those with a cat with a wanderlust, and a wife who attracts insects, the solution is not straightforward!
Interesting timing; my new landlord bought two (I need four, so maybe he had these already on hand) of trim-to-fit “Insect Window Screen” - looks totally generic off Amazon or Temu (??). They affix to the interior of the window frame with sticky tape and the opposite side is velcro-like to pop into the screen holes. He says they work well here in the flat above me (a duplex), He just upgraded my windows, and had not installed these yet. I will do so today and report back. After I purchase a step ladder, that is!
Fair point. That’s ours.
I should have said “a more modern shed”
Hopefully a really modern well insulated property should be as good as an old stone house, or better!
I think ours is reasonable, but being built in 2003 isn’t as good as current constructions. The seller told us she had the roof insulation topped up with sheep’s wool and that it made quite a difference.
Sounds similar to the ones we used to use on our doors downstairs in the old house. Although ours were stuck to the exterior of the door frames, and had magnets so they’d shut automatically behind you as you passed through.
I agree with your landlord… they worked brilliantly for us for the past 5 years.
For the main door which we used constantly I had to buy a new one each year. Inevitably, by the end of the season, our dog would have managed to put holes in it. No matter how much we tried to teach him to open it with his head, he’d instead swipe at it with his paw.
For the upstairs windows, however, we used AvosDim like @JaneJones. We left them in place when we moved, so the new tenants are benfiting from them now.
We use similar with a split held by magnets so easy to exit or enter. Currently sold in Action but ours was a strange size so came from Amazon at several times the price.
I’ve ordered a couple of their products to try. One is an aluminium framed roll down type and the other a frame that is secured between the shutter and the bottom of the window frame.
Looked at their website and they have many different solutions at reasonable prices. Bought two new top clips for my roller shutter a few weeks ago. €20 on Amazon. €5.50 on AviosDim. I need something for my large patio doors soon so I’ll be looking there. BTW, I have no association with AviosDim
I had mixed feelings about our AvosDim moustiquaires.
The price was reasonable. I liked that they’re made to measure because we struggled to find anything that fitted the dimensions of our windows. It was a bit fiddly to fit on a couple of the frames but I managed it eventually… and I’m not great at DIY.
However the roller mechanism was sometimes annoying… and of course it happened to be one of the windows in our bedroom It was fine when being closed, but wouldn’t always ascend correctly, or one side would go up at a different speed to the other and cause issues.
Saying that, it wasn’t a huge issue so I’d probably still get them again.
