Prince Albert was also responsible for the Balmoral tartan that the royals (I refuse to capitalise that word!) wear up there at Christmas. Apparently when they first went up there, the place was still hung with Stuart tartan from the previous century.

I used to give an Open University lecture on C19th European nationalism and there are many interesting parallels between that phenomenon in Germany and Scotland (except of course for the outcomes). This bizarre early C20th US cartoon was my favourite PP slide and very popular with students.
