Lake Ontario is now Lake America

…according to the Orange Buffoon.

I’m actually surprised he didn’t go the whole hog and name it Lake Trump.

Or he could have gone for the set and renamed all the Great Lakes to Lake Donald, Lake Melania, Lake Don Jr, Lake Eric and Lake Ivanka.

He mentioned at the signing ceremony that “we’ve got a gulf and a lake, perhaps we need an ocean”, so stand by for the Pacific to be renamed the Ocean of America.

The rest of the world will of course take no notice.

It’s a cheap way to demonstrate he’s ‘making America great again’ by renaming bits of geography.

True - he’s not got much else of any benefit to the American people to show for his activities!

It’s a shame they (and we) have to put up with his senile nonsense.

The only benefit I see is that unemployed 20 year olds can gain $1 million in a year!

By voting him in they certainly did bring much of this on themselves.

If they allow him to alter the US Constitution, or to get away with breaking it, the end of his (current!) term will not mean the end of the mayhem.

Dead cat or toddler tantrum, not entirely sure which.

I gather he’s also considering renaming the San Andreas Fault, the Joe Biden Fault…

Canada, Mexico, or anywhere that’s having to put up with this nonsense really should start temporarily renaming things ‘Lake Trump Epstein’ ‘The Gulf of Trump & Epstein’ etc etc. After an ALMIGHTY tantrum he will decide very quietly not to do it any more. Greenland could even temporarily rename itself ‘Trump Epstein Island’, as long as the inhabitants understand and are guaranteed it’s only temporary, I can’t imagine there would be as much upset as otherwise about being named after the world’s two most infamous rapists and paedophiles…

Renaming everything can have strange effects. A quickie of another of Trump’s role models: https://youtu.be/NYJ2w82WifU?si=ZxAfA9GK4usowW2w

Just as a matter of general interest, how does one go about changing the name of a lake, a river, a sea… when it’s a matter of history and generations of agreement. Clearly, it cannot be on the whim of a single person. Is there the equivalent of a land registry office for such things ?

There’s a good history of name changes over the generations. Is it just a matter of saying so and everyone else just going along with it, until it sticks.

He has also renamed Canada Geese, they are now to be called Donald Ducks.:joy:

A line from a British Trump fan. Epstein was funded by the Russians to blackmail leaders and influences. So it wasnt the Zionists I asked?

In the (other) Trump thread

Trump can do as he wishes, re renaming thngs, but I don’t know what legal weight is behind it?

He did ban AP from the WH because they did not conform to his wishes. But then again, what excuse does he need to ban free press?!

And isn’t there a difference between the UK and France? As I understand it, open tocorrection, The Academie Francaise tells the Gov how to use language? In the UK there is no equivalent body, is there?

The Oxford English Dictionary takes it’s definitions from common usage, it does not dictate how words should be defined/used.

“Literally” has literally reversed it’s deinition! (open for argument on that too)

Very irritating. Disinterested for uninterested is another irritant. There are many, alas.
People ‘turning round and saying xyz’ also bemuses and amuses me, I imagine them spinning as they converse.

I am unsure which generation it is, but the use of “like” always jars with me. And so does “estuaqry English” pronounciations. And so does wannabe gangtsta talk.

I remain immune to the perceived sins of starting sentences with And .

There’s a difference between different nations naming a nation/city using in their own language (London/Londres) but it’s a whole new ball game to change the name completely… because you’re sulking.

Trump is not the knowing servant of Epstein, Russia, nor Israel. He is, IMHO, a very selfish person, only after what is good for himself, and some of his clan. I hesitate to talk about his legacy, as he might even have a half-baked belief in his own existance indefinitely.

That does not mean that, many (Putain and Netanyahu particularly, but also others),are not using him though. They are playing him.
Wavering about, and going off on tangents maybe, but he is making them better off.

Language evolves, not a lot you can do about it. L’académie has tried but all they’ve really succeeded in doing is creating a country where the written language is increasingly diverging from the spoken language.

Oh very true, and I think the days of prescriptive vs descriptive grammar are over. I think it’s a pity nevertheless that there’s a noticeable impoverishment when it comes to vocabulary among a great swathe of the population (in most languages) simply because of not reading (or speaking, beyond pass the milk, etc) and it leads to misunderstanding and a lack of nuance.
