Le Canon français

I’ve been following mutterings in various newspapers, but still can’t see what the fuss is about..

As I understand it, the 2 proposed events are Banquets to celebrate (and enjoy) the many wonderful French products, wine, delicacies..

Perhaps @Juliet has more real life knowledge as I believe that Bourges was one of the first of these events?

What is at issue it seems is not that it is wrong for a (presumably profit making) company to put on large scale events offering expensive meals (€80) that celebrate French cuisine with an aim of helping producres.. But that the these initially innocuous get togethers are being influenced in a bad way to exclude large segments of the population, and to use the event to promote hate.

That has echos of similarity with some nasty secret societies

Personally it sounds horrendous to pay €80 for a meal that consists of 1kg of heavily meat orientated food and alcohol surrounded by flag waving men. They offer no vegetarian option. The pictures show few women!

The price didn’t alarm me as one sees other public “celebrations” priced at much more than that (eg NYEve). I wouldn’t pay that amount and often wonder how families can afford it… but they obviously do or events would fall away from lack of support.

Hopefully someone has been to a “CF banquet” and can report back to us :crossed_fingers:

I don’t think it’s as innocent as that Stella. For the Left to be so energised it must a hard right affair. I think there’s more goose stepping than goose paté involved.

Is there gammon on the menu?

Here we go again …

Everyone to the right of Lenin is a facist! Meat eating country folk are obviously Nazis and these feasts are basically the Nuremberg rally 2.0!

I’ve just read “Everything I Don’t Like Is Literally Hitler” and want to know if I’m doing this correctly.

Marx out of ten please.

Bourges, like many small provincial towns! Le Canon français is funded by billionaire Pierre-Edouard Stérin, who is far, far, far right. Hence the controversy.

PES is a seriously dodgy bit of Franco-style work, anything to do with him is well worth avoiding.

I think the term is “Denial isn’t just a river in Africa”

The “Horseshoe Theory” of politics posits that you’d be lucky to get a Rizla between “far, far, far right” and “far, far, far left”.

Yes but. The far right tend to be a lot worse on bodily autonomy for half the population, for instance.

Although recently the difference between far left and ordinary left has become narrower. It’s coincided with the left’s abandonment of principle in favour of expediency and grievance politics (and simply the sort of nonsense that thinks, as in this thread, “You must be racist if you enjoy a traditional, convivial dinner put on by a startup which got funding from someone I disapprove of”).

The fact that Melenchon (the Farage of the Left) is whining about it tells you all you need to know. LFI is as financially grubby as RN (check Mediapart).

Well I have some colleagues who attended a few of those banquets, as they are indeed very popular with those who like the company of white people. Pork is abundantly served to make sure no Muslims are present, and berets are worn as a reminder of what France should be. Vegetarians are not welcome, too woke. We talked about this on this forum before, there is nothing innocent for a young man to wear a basque beret (the round one, with a piece of fabric sticking out at the top). This and suspenders is usually associated with the far right - I am still talking about young people.
The problem with the Canon Français is that it started with those two guys who went to a business school and found a way to make a lot of money - good for them - surfing on national identity. What was originally a nice project with songs and traditional méchoui type food has become a rally for all sorts of bitter half brains who feel threatened at the though of women emancipating and mosques being built.
Then, at the last banquet in Caen, a crowd of young men walked down the streets doing nazi salutes and singing Wermacht songs. They threatened black people and called them all sorts of names. Le Canon Français is supported by Sterin, who is a nasty piece of (*) , who claims to be exiled in Belgium for tax reasons, and who wants to purify European blood by making it white and Christian. (Projet Pericles). But Sterin is everywhere (Smartbox, private schools, Université Catholique de l’Ouest, etc. )
What was unthinkable 10 years ago, having people giving nazi salutes and chanting nazi hymns unbothered in plain sight, is now common, thanks to those seemingly harmless initiatives such as the Canon Français.

Meat eating country folk have been around for ages and most of them never asked to be associated with companies like the CF, founded by Parisian management school graduates who enjoy playing country folk by wearing white shirts, berets and suspenders, but who’ve probably never been to a village barbecue. Same goes for their customers.
It’s a form of cultural appropriation and I feel offended by it, having grown up in rural France.

Do you have much need of Rizlas? Just asking

When you say suspenders, is that what Brits would call braces? I’m trying not to think of the Folies Bergeres.

I am an avid Mediapart reader, non LFI voter, and there’s no comparison between LFI and RN when it comes to cooking the books. Bardella is being investigated, Le Pen, Saint Just and Louis Alliot have actually been convicted multiple times.
