Life Afloat in France

A few photos from a day on the Soane river yesterday. Nice September cruising.

Beautiful. Is that the one named after Sir John, he if the now-museum?
Saône, rhymes with Rhône :slightly_smiling_face:very convenient, makes it easier for little children to remember them.

Thanks for the sarcastic comment, obviously you have never made a typo.

I know a reasonable amount about the Saöne , previously known as Arar, and latterly Sauccona by the Romans, and the Rhöne rivers, which the Romans called Rodanus.

Why? Because I’ve been living afloat on the Saöne for 18 years and navigated its full length several times.

I also have a reasonable knowledge of the Rhöne having moved several vessels up to 30m long up and down it from and to the confluence of the Saöne and Rhöne at Lyon, including the Petit Rhone.

So if you want to debate the Inland waterways of the UK, parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and most of France, I’m happy to oblige, having navigated well over 15000 miles on them since I was eight, sixty five years ago.

I hope I haven’t made any typos for you to pick up on, but today I haven’t had a few glasses of red wine.

Steady, matey!

Perhaps you’re seeing sarcasm where it wasn’t intended?

Lovely pictures, anyway.

Lighten up! I know 0 about waterways and as you can see I made a typo in what I wrote, and I don’t even drink at all, so no excuse :joy: Why ö rather than ô though?

Bargeman, please feel flattered. Véro is our resident dominatrix when it comes to French grammar and has men on this forum queuing up for a spanking. She is the Académie française’s answer to Seinfeld’s Soup Nazi.

Your photos are absolutely gorgeous. Stuck in a flat in the middle of a city, I feel deeply envious. If one were thinking of embarking on a life afloat, any ideas where owners mostly advertise barges for sale? Just so I can browse and dream. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Do you have problems accessing certain waterways due to drought, Bargeman? I think several stretches of the UK inland waterways had to close due to lack of water.

Ooh stop it.

Well I wouldn’t go that far, but you can take it from me, she wasn’t having a dig.

And yes, love the photos of a life I would have loved to have lived. :joy:

BTW umlauts and circumflexes do not have any place in my vocabulary and, although I know how to do them, I have never used them. The fact that I am rarely misunderstood as a result makes my case for me I think.

That’s because the standard of SMS grammar, even among educated people, is abysmal!

Every abyss has a bottom.

:joy: I used the Umlault just to see you bite, very predictable

It’s a very special life, but not for all.

The are many boats and barges for sale on various websites. Here’s two.

It’s a huge subject, if you want any guidance send me a P.M.

This year’s drought has caused problems for the authorities in trying to maintain water levels in Europe and the UK.

Sadly a large number of canals have been closed for navigation. Most rivers have just about been kept open.

Living on the Saône we have been lucky, navigation has been kept open with some restrictions.

Europe needs steady rainfall for several weeks to replenish water reserves. So do a rain dance please.

Life afloat a bit dull, is it?

Commiserations.

If you read my post I said something like.

It’s too big a subject to write all about it. But if you are really interested send me a Private Message.

We’ve had a reasonable amount recently, in Cumbria, but I think we’re still along way from normal levels. Hopefully more will be coming to a place near you soon.

I’m with you . Is French grammar that important on an English language social forum?

I’d go so far in saying English grammar isn’t even particularly important. Oxbridge language proffers we ain’t.

Good morning Saint Jean de Loan, plus autumn reflection.

I am unsure as to how to message - sorry?
