More humiliation for Starmer

I was very disappointed in Yvette Cooper. If this ruling is upheld she should walk the plank.

Whilst Cooper brought this in Shabana Mahmood could have reversed it and given her heritage it’s surprising that she’s determined to appeal today’s ruling.

Someone I play badminton with (who’s in his 70’s) got arrested last year whilst taking part in a PA protest, after sweating for several weeks he was let off with a warning!

Just obeying orders from Number 10, as I’m sure Cooper was. There’s only one bucko responsible for this debacle, Mr. Keep Everybody, including The Board of Deputies of British Jews, Happy Starmer.

Here they are again, conflating antisemitism with anti genocide

Excuse my ignorance, but is this site not about living in France?

Yes it is. However most of the SF denizens are either current or ex UK residents so UK politics tends to dominate the “Politics” category - though US politics does seem to be figuring heavily for some reason, can’t quite put my finger on why

We have, periodically, tried to encourage discussion of French politics but it seems there is not all that much appetite for it and the effort always fizzles out.

Which is why a number of members block the Politics category completely.

She was always very pleasant when I met her and in Southwark often got things done but folk rise to their level of incompetence. Also this has been a blight on normal folk objecting to genocide.

Oh OK.

I am also from the UK but some 30+ years ago and being sh..ted by Brexit seems to cloud my opinion of the uk.

Please do bring up French politics if there is something you feel is worthy of comment - it’s not banned or anything

A few of us are interested in French politics, so don’t hesitate to post away.

Just don’t be disappointed by the response!

One of several reasons for that is that most of us aren’t allowed to vote in France. Insted we just stand on the sidelines and despair.

Incidentally, enjoyed Macron’s speech live this evening at the Munich Security Conference, but it’s unlikely to change French opinion of him.

My income comes from the UK, I pay taxes in the UK and my kids are in the UK. Not unlike a discussion I recently had with my GP, I have an interest in French politics, UK politics involve me.

Okay dokey. I was not being cynical only questioning why british politics that do not have a direct effect on us ‘citizens from no where’ in France.

As to French politics, how will an FN sorry a RN government affect us?

Might depend on your skin colour

Scots and N Irelanders tend to be the palest Brits, so maybe they’ll continue to be very welcome!

I fear that is the criteria.

Despite the above frivolous post, the drift to the right is already affecting many of us who were applying, or hoping to apply for French nationality because the recent ruling that dependence on foreign (pension) income makes one ineligible for French nationality.

Likewise, but british politics do not influence the outcome. I hopefully have an answer in my case.

As @DrMarkH says, the pressure from the far Right has meant even a government like Macron’s feels the need to posture: hence the Retailleau diktat on foreigners’ income. Unless it changes, the hope many of us have of citizenship will be dashed.

Unless @JIS ’s wheeze works!

I don’t dispute. Only if a fartrage government deports EU citizens does our residence in France comes under question. I do not think France would unilctrually deport UK citizens.

Good question, though a bit rhetorical at the moment, and of course a RN government if installed may change, or will have changed, policy before, during and after any election.

Some ‘plus proche’ questions might be what are the polls saying, are they correct, what are the voters currently electing, which Maries do the RN control, which Maries have they lost or won to date, what do they do in the ones they control?

Plenty of people post on here about what their voting neighbours think and vote.

Is ‘us’ defined as France non-RN voters, or UK people, or all immigrants? And probably good to have consideration of whether the different groups interests align, or differ.

Hopefully, I’m right, but I can’t see white European tax paying immigrants being a target group. OTOH, as in the case of foreign pensions, we might be unintentional ‘collateral damage’ from some hastily drafted law.

In that case, moving to Portugal seems the simplest option

.. and I’ve spent all these years learning French -
