I love AK - the Miriam Makeba version is lovely but not as powerful. A SA friend of mine has a daughter called Malaika

I always regretted not seeing in Paris (when she lived there, 1980s-90s), I missed a couple of opportunities, but as she was starting to rise to prominence in the late 80s-early 90s and giving concerts in small venues in Paris, I left France. Sheâs still touring mind but itâs never or rarely the same once they become big international stars.
One of the big African bands at the time in France in the 1980s was the Senegalese band Touré Kunda (who also lived in Paris for a good while, saw them there twice), they are great:
Great, I saw Alpha Blondy at WOMAD in 2002, I used to go every other year on average.
When I moved to the UK in 1990, one of the major African band in France was TourĂ© Kunda as I wrote but they were unknown in the UK and likewise in the UK one of the major African bands was Thomas Mapfumo, largely unknown in France⊠Vestiges of colonial history I suppose, as TourĂ© Kunda first rose to fame in France via the Senegalese diaspora, and Thomas Mapfumo in the UK via the Zimbabwean one. TM are a fantastic band, their musical and cultural trademark is a very distinctive sound called âChimurengaâ. I saw them twice, in Sheffield, in a legendary music/social venue called The JuJu Club in Crookes, Sheffield 10, not sure if itâs still going but at the time they would play lots of âWorld Musicâ bands. Fabulous band.
I love handpans and couldnât believe my ears when I first encountered them (a duo playing in the street in Freiburg in Germany) amazing sounds coming from what to my eyes was just an uparmoured wok
Great lockdown song . Mick Jagger and Dave Grohl.
