My Life With an iPhone

I thought that you had to go and fetch your passport?

and, yes, I have seen someone turned away 'cos no passport… from Hosp in HVienne.

They didn’t turn me away, they told me and then treated me, and, keeping faith I went and came back with it.

Well done!

I can only say what I’ve seen (signs) in Hospitals and other places… and report on what has happened to me and what I have witnessed.

Of course, everyone has their own agenda and so many things are done differently… we know that… thus everyone will decide to behave in their own way, that’s fair enough.

Back to the Apple Watch. As usual I went to switch it off last night before putting it on charge. But the red button that has to be slid across to do so is indistinguishable from the one that is marked SOS.

Guess which one I swiped, I tried to Cancel, didn’t work, tried to press the off button, no luck and meanwhile a message popped up to say that it was calling the Emergency Services.. Amongst all the confused reading I had done on the subject I had understood that it wouldn’t call them direct but alert Marie-Paule to do so, but that might have been under a different button marked ‘My Medical’ or something.

Panicing now I pressed everything I could think of to switch it off, short of bashing its brains out on the side of the cabinet. Eventually success but a message appeared warning that if I continued all the settings would be lost. No contest, continue, and I left it on charge. But just in case M-P was alerted I left my phone on all night in case she was awoken and rang me.

In the event, no blue lights reflected off my ceiling and no worried phone call has arrived from Marie-Paule. :joy: But I am now in possession of an Apple Watch which is neither use nor ornament, and Eddie is out all day, but he reckons I should be able to handle it without transferring the sim from my Doro to the iPhone. We’ll see.

Why do you so that David?

I was experimenting to see why and how it changes it’s mind. Some mornings when I remove it from the charger, whether switched off or not, it lights up and continues in standby. That means I don’t put my passcode in and it still does all I want it to which is give me date and time and availablility of Emergency etc.. But some days, again switched off or not, it gives a false date for an hour or so. It is entirely unpredictable and illogical and has confused me to the extent that I can’t remember at bedtime whether I need it off or on. I think I have decided to leave it on always but last night I forgot.

I don’t think you should ever turn it off David, I never do, and you shouldn’t need a passcode unless you are using it for Apple wallet (which I somehow doubt:slightly_smiling_face:).

Yes, I agree, now, and will still keep it on and charged up each night from now on.

With some difficulty I think I have managed to get the iPhone (without sim) to update the Watch but the last thing I had to do was put them side by side with the Watch still on the charger. Been some time now but fingers crossed I might have managed it. Wouldn’t be surprised if my settings needed doing again, but don’t know yet.

I have finally realised that I can use the iPhone in the house within the reach of my wifi without sim and thus without charge just for actions such as this, and who knows, others.

Everyone has a choice - get up to speed with technology - 80% of which is good (talking about iPhones, (android as well),electronic wallets, contactless cards etc, or you can stay with what you have… no point in criticising/commenting on an individual’s choice - it’s a personal thing…

Answering your question a bit late David, but my excuse is that I don’t have an iPhone.

Stella Maris is/was the Virgin Mary, the protectress of sailors, which was previously one of Isis’s many jobs. During the first Christian millenium Mary took over a lot of Isis’s attributes and the earliest representations of Mary were derived from the Egyptian Isis.

If you love your Doro “fliptop” because of the tactile buttons and simplicity, you can keep using it! You just need the iPhone to stay turned on and connected to the internet back at your house. As long as the iPhone is “alive” somewhere, your Watch can usually relay information through it.

Trouble is that I think the beloved Doro will suffer the same fate as my button equipped Samsung in that being only 3G it will no longer work once the 3G network is turned off. Next year I think.

Thank you, often wondered about it and why so many ports had such a place with the same name.

@Landida , yes I do like it but got to admit the pressure of pressing rather than touching is a bit wearing on the right thumb now that I do a lot more texting.

@Robert_Hodge I think the Doro is 4G, I’ll have a look next time I switch it on so does that mean I have another 2 years? Might see me out.

When I went back to the Watch the other night I heard a vibration from the nearby iPhone and there was a message telling me that the Watch was fully charged. :joy:
Another thing I must have done the other day while trying to pair it again with the iPhone must have been following a lot more instructions that I really need. For instance it thinks I go to sleep at 11.30 each night so at 11.15 it vibrates and then switches off. Then switches itself back on in the morning when I disconnect it from the charger.
Amazing, not sure if I mentioned it the other night but a message told me that when the SOS button is pressed it does connect directly to the Emergency Services with my GPS location, and at the same time reports it to Marie-Paule that it has done so. Must have caught it just in time then as nobody arrived and she wasn’t disturbed.

Depends which model Doro but most non-smart versions (i.e. no internet) are 2G. France has had most of the 3G turned off and 2G is following fast.

My wife has a Doro and I have tested various other 2G/3G basic phones over the last few years. She won’t have a smart phone despite many attempts by me and others to teach her how to use it so, thankfully, the UK is keeping 2G going until 2033 and the Doro will continue to be used by her.

4G Doro phones are available as I bought one for my mother last year. I could pick it up later in the year if it’s any use to anyone.

Yes I have just flipped it open and it definitely says 4G. :joy:

I was quite amazed that they still do those phones and in 4G to boot. It was really useful as I could replace my mother’s obsolete phone with an identical one which was quite important with her Alzheimer’s.

That would be important to me as well, and I don’t have Alzheimers ----- well, not as far as I know.

Now speaking of that…I often speak to myself or Jules in the house but today I experienced no less than 3 consecutive sentences where I had to pause for several minutes in the middle of each because of lost words. It is infuriating because I know what I want to say, I know exactly what the word is, but cannot form it in speech.

“Calvados” ?
