My new toy - Astronomy telescope

Good timing!

That must have taken a huge amount of planning or a huge amount of luck. Almost certainly the former.

Here in Vire we’ve had crystal clear nights. The clarity of the air can be judged by how bright and clear the stars were on or near the horizon. Overhead they are brilliant. O’Brian the Punter and the 7 Sisters superb.

But then we get this.

The river can be seen to the left of the end of over-the-road’s roof. It snakes down thru’ the houses to the left of the road. It tumbles along throwing vapour into the air. Penned in by the steep valley, this hangs amongst the trees and in the course of the river giving us Dampness Central.

It’ll be like this the rest of the day and …

Well that’s no fun.

At the moment it looks like I might get a couple of clear nights in Surrey on Tuesday and Wednesday this week…

But Sod’s Law it will be almost full Moon !!

Got six hours last night with my new camera. It seems to have worked well, but I won’t get time to process the images until probably tomorrow.

Haven’t fully got round to processing the images I took, but I will.
I noticed haloes around some bright stars in the images, that I didn’t see with the old ZWO camera so looked online about possible causes. And I immediately found a thread about this and someone discovered that there was no AR coating on the sensor glass cover. Several others chimed in who all bought their cameras in December 2025 like me. Player One investigated immediately and found a batch of covers from Corning in the US which hadn’t been coated. They’re sending replacements out to affected users and distributers next week. It’s easy to replace the cover and charge the desiccant, I’ve done it before on my other camera. One of the reasons I chose the Player One camera as well as the aggressive cost was it has an extremely good reputation for customer service whereas ZWO is nowhere near as good. So, when I needed it they responded very quickly.
Despite the issue with the camera, for a first try the images I have are very good and will improve with more processing.

Sounds good! Keep us posted!

Here is a very much compressed jpg of my first try with my new camera. It’s only had basic processing to desaturate the stars and stretch the image. The original FITS image is 301 MB. You can see the halos around the larger stars which should be fixed shortly.

Very nice! Lots more good stuff to come if that’s a first sample!

I’m very pleased with my first try. I deliberately picked a target that my old camera couldn’t really capture with enough detail. Once I get my narrowband filter I’ll be able to get even better images.

Here is an updated picture of the Tadpoles, taken with my new camera which had to have it’s window replaced as the original was from a batch that hadn’t had an anti reflective coating applied. It’s now much better.

The halos around the brighter stars have now almost completely disappeared.

Is that with a colour filter?

It’s a colour camera with an anti pollution filter.

Very nice!

Is this the current / correct place for posting astro photo’s ? I searched and several came up, not sure as this is an organisational one, and it wasn’t ‘my new toy’ that did it. I hope very interesting nevertheless, I suppose I could have stuck it in the ‘interesting things I have seen on the web’ thread…

also posting this, I don’t want to crowd out the personal photo’s.

Should there be a dedicated astrophysics / cosmology thread? (with photo’s!)

Yes could be good I think, there are a number of folks with an interest.

Those telescopes in Chile produce amazing images.

Especially the new Vera Rubin scope.

There’ll be comets over the white cliffs of Dover

Ooh, a bite! Would we be talking Higgs Boson, dark matter, curvature (it’s not that bloody huge!), unification of general relativity with gravity, the dark death, and so on, or general stuff like Steven Hawking? Either way, it’s fascinating, and I’d be in!
