No sign of carte grise - travelling to UK

We bought a second hand car last November and are proposing to drive to the UK in it next week. We did all the ANTS stuff online but still have no sight of our carte gris. Could this possibly cause us problems?

Do you get some kind of acknowledgement from ANTS?

Yes, we did, so carrying that round with us.

That’s quite a long time ago and it shouldn’t take that long. Have you checked your ANTS/France titres account?

If you’ve completed the ANTS process, you should have a “certificat provisoire d’immatriculation (CPI)”. That’s what legally allows you to drive while waiting for the carte grise.
If you don’t have the CPI, that’s more of a problem, as technically you need proof of registration.
For the UK trip, people do travel with just the CPI, but it can be risky if you’re stopped (especially outside France).
I’d make sure you have the CPI and all paperwork (proof of purchase, insurance). If not, it’s safer to delay or contact ANTS before travelling.

Oh I hate French bureaucracy!

On the 14th December they emailed OH to confirm registration of our command. Then silence.
We’re busy. We don’t have time to spend our lives on the ANTS website. Why on earth didn’t they email this message???

I’ve just checked. I think the mistake, believe it or not is she hasn’t ticked whether he is F or M!!! I can’t see anything else that’s “wrong”.

Do you not receive an email notification from ANTS, Sue, just to say that you need to check the ANTS site because there’s a message waiting for you?
I absolutely loathe ANTS but they did send us these notifications, so we knew when to log in and find the latest message.

If they did, it would have gone to OH and he’s not good at checking his emails, or remembering. Some things are harder these days.

It also infuriates me that they don’t tell you WHAT is wrong with his “identity”.

Tell me about it. I had no hair left after my last dealings with them.

Thank you Jennifer11, that’s brilliant and I’ll pass it on. I thought the hospital would have told her and they possibly did, but she gets very stressed and panics so possibly didn’t understand. She’s not coping very well at the moment, understandable, so I try to help when I can but it’s difficult from here.
She does know she’ll be reimbursed, but I’ll make sure she fully understands.
Massive thanks for such a quick reply.

Re our carte grise, just been into France Services and thank heavens I did. Had a very helpful woman who went through everything with me.

The story gets worse!

We’ve somehow registered our application for the transfer of the carte grise to one of these intermediary companies that claim they will do it for you and then don’t! Unfortunately it meant we parted with 357 euros at the beginning - not knowing any better - having always bought cars before from concessionaires who did it all for us.

I think that happened because the person who sold us the car used this company and just sent us the link to it.

We’re going to have to sort this all out with ANTS and as we are starting our journey to the UK on Monday it won’t get sorted before we go. We are lucky - we have another car we can take - a LHD Kadjar and Rona will be much more comfortable than in the hammock thing I described elsewhere.

We’d hoped to be driving a RHD car, but it will be less stressful just managing “the wrong side of the road” than spending all the time worrying we’ll be stopped by the police when we don’t have the correct papers.

If we can’t make sense of what is/isn’t on the ANTS site itself, I’ll be back to see the lovely France Services woman when we are back from the UK who said she would sort it for me.

At least its getting sorted now. You’ll probably be doing far more km this side of the channel than the other, its only about 30 mins from Portsmouth to Chichester.

Good point. I love the fact that it’s so close.

And coming out of the port directly onto the M275 :+1:

And off the roundabout on the A27 south of Chichester and we’re there! And I think I will manage the A27 there and back to John Lewis and M&S food store (bliss)

The traffic is horrendous in and out of that roundabout. There is a way (apparently) through the town avoiding the A27.

There’s no obligation to carry the registration document in the UK. I don’t know if it’s any different with a foreign car. Personally, I’d be happy so long as I can show licence and insurance. I can’t imagine any circumstance where you’d be asked for your registration document on the spot.

I would hate to risk it.

The knack is knowing when to travel. We are 10 mins from JL and M&S at the right time of day.

Grrrr jealous.
