Opinion: John Bercow is itching to stop Brexit – and he might just succeed

I’m still trying to work out what happened.

Some suggestion it could be reversed in the Lords

I’m glad not to be the only one trying to work it out… :frowning:

OK, it seems some irregularity with the tellers means votes against were not counted - I’m quite speechless that would be allowed to mean something is considered “voted for”.

Edit: Having found a relevant video clip a shout was called for “Ayes” which yielded a few in favour, then a rather quiet and hurried call was made for a shout for “Noes” - I think basically the house wasn’t paying attention - and no voices were heard. Thus it was called as “the ayes have it” without going to division.

The actual amendment forces the PM, should he need to ask for an extension under the terms of the bill, to do so in order to debate a Withdrawal Agreement Bill which incorporates the outcome from the abandoned inter-party talks in May - so it probably doesn’t kill the whole thing but adds a layer of largely needless complexity.

I think

What do you make of this?

Well, they probably realise that they are being played as pawns in Johnson’s silly games and that he is probably going to ignore the law anyway - as he has said he will.

It makes sense but do we trust Johnson that this isn’t yet another trick?

If the law does goes through an election could happen next month although I’d rather it’s held after November the 1st so that an extension has to be triggered.

Don’t you just love Jess Phillips? My only guess is that the Treasury bench are grateful for the fact that there are quite a few benches on the Opposition side between Jess and the vulnerable testicles of ‘man spread’ honourable and right honourable members opposite

Brilliant

Jess Phillips is what an MP should be.

Must admit I have only just “discovered” this formidable lady - but I heartily support every word she speaks in the link on this thread.

The disappointing thing about the whole Brexit farce in the H of C is that there are many decent, sensible MP’s who care about the lives of their constituents but they have all been tainted by the tribal politics that has been played out for the last three years.

I admit to being fuddled… does Revoking Article 50 enter into any of these to-ings and fro-ings ??? or am I just dreaming of pie in the sky… :upside_down_face::kissing_smiling_eyes:

No, the present bill is designed to thwart a no-deal exit and extend the process until the end of January in the hope of finding some sort of resolution.

At present the only route to revoking A50 would be to use the extension to hold a further referendum with the option to remain in the EU and for that option to win out.

But no-one is really planning beyond mid October at present.

Another referendum would take six months to organise but maybe the only way to resolve this now.

But, who can we rely on - to provide the True Facts - so that the Referendum will not simply be one side shouting loudly at the other…

Making an informed decision (vote) requires information… preferably the truth… aaaargh …

Very true in parliament and many other walks of life.
Car Salespeople, Estate Agents and Builders to name just 3 have always been judged as you suggest all MP’s are but like them there are honest caring people everywhere who try to make a positive difference but all get tar’d with the same brush.

Next time there should be a clear choice - approve ‘a deal’ (whatever it is) or remain.

I do hope they allow all British folk to vote … ie Me Too

If you’ve been out of the UK for 15 years+ then I’m afraid not as things stand.

I thought Referendum was mean to include everyone next time around - wsn’t this one of the arguments against the legality (whatever) of the last one…

Beggars belief… not being able to have any say whatsoever in something which can change our lives :dizzy_face:
