Over 50, getting up to wee in the night

Interesting post and timing. The other night I got up 4 times to pee, thats the first time its happened. Concerned obviously as I take saw palmetto which seemed to have been helping. I have been drinking a bit more real coffee, grind the beans myself and use a French press. 3 days without a cup of coffee have been 3 night without getting up at all! Changed to drinking tea. So what works for me isnt for you, interesting.

I have read most of this thread and can only opine that for me the excercise is the critical factor.

I will be seventy in June but I still visit the gym three times a week as I have done for most of my life. I am also generally active and very grateful to have no debilitating health issues. I stopped drinking twenty eight years ago and smoking eight years ago.

Which do I miss the most…smoking by a mile.

Anyway, perhaps as the result or perhaps by good fortune I sleep seven to eight hours each night without any disturbance for bathroom visits or otherwise.

Some years ago, after lunch with a couple of friends who were visiting Angouleme, we went a coffee shop.

On my way home on the motorbike I felt as high as a kite and buzzing! Never felt that way before.

Caffeine in coffee makes me high, while caffeine in tea makes me pee!

I think I can do without it.

Often the combo of sugar and caffein, hence energy drinks etc. At work there were azing chocholate brownies, had one with a capaccino and felt very rough with heart racing, never to be repeated.
Back to you and I, I had two cups of coffee today and will see the effect tonight. Dont usually have a coffee past 4pm anyway but tea fixed it for the last 3 nights. Also tomato based products (no seeds though) the lycopene in the tomatoes is very good at reducing the inflamation of the prostate. Other highly coloured fruit and veg also have lycopene but less. Two tablespoons of tomato paste on the pizza I made on the first day could also have been a big contributory factor, I dont usually change more thing at once so I can work out the issue but I did two on this occasion.

I am sure exercise is important but I do exercise and nothing in that regime has altered recently.

I believe that has probably been a big blessing prostate wise as it the kidneys that release the water so your kidneys must be in good condition because of the lack of alcohol.

Am amazed and saddened by the above posts because at age 71, I don’t have any of the above problems despite many years of drug and alcohol abuse, sorry, ‘pleasurable indulgence’.

But what I do notice is that if on a hike, I seem to consume a lot more water than anyone else and sweat a lot more than others in winter and in summer - thankfully there’s lots of technical clothing.

By contrast, my wife will need barely a mouthful at all in three hours walking, whereas I’ll get through a litre and a half whether it’s freezing of summer.

And long may it continue that way. My episode was very recent as you can tell from the post. Things have gone back to very normal now, back drinking tea over coffee. The situation is exasperated as doctors do not know what causes it but do have some meds to reduce the symptom. You should be pleased to hear you are probably in a lucky 20-30% of 70+ who dont have an issue and that percentage drops down a lot more by age 80.
Any substances I may or may not have taken were quite some time ago, dont smoke, drink only occasionally but may have over done it on coffee. Coffee is suposed to reduce the chances of prostate cancer to some degrees.

Worth remembering that we are all different in our susceptibility to different materials. It’s easy to forget in the enthusiasm and drive of relative youth.

Well I am 81 and have never had a need to get up for a pee in the night. I admit that when I get up in the morning and follow the same progress via front shutters, power on, radio on, heater on, back door open, kitchen heater on and finally to the bathroom, by then I am sometimes busting, but that is all. :joy:

When I had my prostate examination many years ago the doctor said it was too big and booked me in for the op. Nearly pissed myself laughing though because one of the questions he asked me, in French of course, was ‘do you splash your boots when you pee?’ :rofl: I had to explain to him that that phrase was English slang for having a pee. :laughing: For men anyway, I expect ladies of other ways of expressing themselves. :thinking:

Could it be that you are not drinking enough liquids?

Could be, although I think my intake of water and occasional coffee and a small glas of wine in the evenings is sufficient. I always have a glass of water before coffee in the mornings and a glass of water almost last thing at night in addition to that mentioned above.
I do try and makes sure that the last thing I do before going to bed is a visit to the porcelain though. :wink:

Well as the gentleman is 81 and still obviously active and lucid I suggest that he may well be.

I do sometimes wonder if my fluid intake is sufficient as I may inadvertently go for seven hours or more without drinking anything. However, given that I’m approaching seventy, still working out with weights three times a week and with no health issues that I’m aware of I think I’ll just carry on as is. :grinning:

Your reply seems to me to say that you think I am not drinking enough, is that what you meant?

Easy to tell - what colour is your wee? If it’s yellow (especially if dark yellow) you’re not drinking enough and putting a strain on your kidneys. It should be light straw colour.

Mines perfect then, I just sometimes wonder why my OH tells me I drink too much when it’s obvious I dont😉

I can’t tell if if you’re not drinking enough, but it’s a reason that should be considered.

Well sometimes a bit darker first thing in the morning but usually in the ‘light straw colour’ spectrum so that seems okay. Thanks.
