Wise just emailed me earlier and the rate was 1.1501€. It’s the first time I’ve seen over 1.15 for a few weeks.
Seems like years, I might have a dabble then, got an upcoming CRDS bill to pay. ![]()
Might be time to swap a few pounds. I did about a month ago when the £ was 1.16 for about 24 hours. Soon dropped back though. We bought our house when the £ was 1.5, the glory days pre Brexit etc.
I was very lucky with a large transaction at the start of the month. Got around € 1.1580 I think. In saying that, when you add up what difference say half a cent makes, it’s not really that much in the grand scheme of things.
Every little helps.
We were very lucky that the exchange rate was a little over 1.15 when we exchanged a large sum for a personal pension drawdown earlier this year. It’s always a swings and roundabouts decision when considering loss of interest earnings over exchange rate fluctuations, more luck than judgement when not being able to predict the future plays a huge part.
What do you all use to exchanging larger sums of pounds to euro?
Revolut.
Revolut too
Why Revolut? Exchange rate today 10:30 07/03/26 appears to be 1.1506 with £190 fees on £10,000 with Revolut. Wise 1.1544 with £33.48 fees on £10,000 - am I missing something?
Yes, you upgrade your Revolut account for a month @£7.99 and there are no transfer fees.
I actually subscribe as it saves me quite a bit of money. Most of our income comes from the UK and so needs to be transferred. We tend to transfer it in large tranches when the rate is best and we get a better rate than than if we used it for free and no charges. We also get NordVPN for free and there are other freebies we could take advantage of but don’t.
I’m usually transferring the other way (because I thought we were moving to England). Anything up to €20k I do myself using Wise.
If I was sending, say, the proceeds of a house sale I would probably use Lumon.
So with my maths, the Euros in your pocket are Revolut incl. fees €11497.92 (with the added element of upgrading and downgrading your account) and Wise €11505.35 incl. fees?
Apologies for the brief thread drift, but out of interest have your plans changed?
Have you done any rate comparisons with Lumon? I’ve just looked but they require my tel. no. (not something I give out easily). I’m thinking (while the € is depressed by the Iran debacle) of transferring some capital £ to € (we are getting out of letting in the UK).
Yes. After years of research to try and find an area that’s dry by UK standards and has a nice little city with plenty going on, my husband came back from a bike ride the other day and asked why the *** were we moving to Norwich. So apparently we’re not. It was actually his idea originally but never mind.
Frankly it will save me a lot of hassle if we just stay put. The concern about him not being able to cope with admin if anything happens to me is still there. But he’s an adult and he has been warned.
We’ll move to Northern Ireland at some point in our 70s but as we already have a house and family there it should be easy. And in the meantime I’ll put as much as possible in his name so that if I do snuff it there will be less for him to do.
Hi
I don’t think Lumon’s rates are as good as Wise but they offer quite a bit of handholding if you’re nervous about sending a really big sum.
For example, they can check the paperwork for anti-money laundering even before you do the transfer to avoid holdups.
