Prostate Cancer - Ignoring It Won't Beat It

Oh and by the way the NHS also stand on the fence on PSA Prostate cancer - PSA testing - NHS

I am still having it done but as I said I have zero prostate problem symptoms.

Harry - the purpose of this thread was to encourage men to take a PSA test. Whether anyone does or not is entirely their own choice based on whatever information they choose to base that decision on.

As I’ve said, a few times, PSA testing has saved my life so I am more than likely to be a tad biased  Naturally I would therefore encourage PSA testing.

I’m not sure why you keep making the point about not having pc symptoms? I had no symptoms - many men diagnosed with pc don’t.

I wish you all the best with your own PSA test and well done for being brave enough to take one!

yeah I probably went off topic. It was about the doc telling me PSA is not effective and its only for older people with larger prostates.

I told him I do not care i want it added.

Im told i might have to pay for the blood test but as I said, my health is worth a few quid.

Point being that ive lost in it all is. PSA test is nothing to loose, get it done even if you think you have nothing. Better to be sure.

9€ at my local vampire shop (if paying privately!)

cancer is rife in my family, my great granddad and grandma were killed by cancer, my granddad had it and died of cancer and my grandma had it but died of a stroke. My dad just died from it, my mum has had it but survives still.

Cancer to me is no joke.

I did not ask the price of the test I just said cool no worries. (doc speaks English)

running joke with my patients as I worked nights was i was a vampire drinking the blood. I used to ask if they minded if I took an extra vile for later.

Thanks Simon…yes she is a fighter…she put her treatment on hold to carry her “miracle baby”…(her second child…her daughter…) and after the birth was doing great…the last 6 months have been extremely stressful for her (long story involving violent exes) so this latest op was a severe blow to her emotionally as well as physically…

Harry, I know these things are embarrassing, but believe me, the embarrassment lasts only seconds. My husband had a PSA test a few years ago under pressure from me, cancer was diagnosed and he had radiotherapy. He is now clear and has regular PSAs and telephone consultations with the Royal Marsden Hospital, and will do for the rest of his life. My Dad and my Grandfather both died of PC, each developing bowel cancer from the prostate cancer, and in Grandpa’s case, bone cancer too.

When my French invitation to bowel cancer screening arrived, I ignored it each time, but this year, feeling low after a death in the UK, I decided to accept the offer, hoping Philip would have the test too. He is still thinking about it (and I am still nagging him) but yesterday I had 4 polyps removed from my colon which could have progressed to a very unpleasant rectal cancer which would have necessitated a stoma and destroyed my life. Trust me, this involved more than a finger being inserted!

Maybe embarassment over intimate examinations is a man thing - any woman who has had a baby goes through far worse. I’d rather inflict brief embarrassment on my spouse than lose him. I know many high PSA results are for things other than cancer: so are the positive results for the bowel cancer test, of which only 10% of positives already have cancer, but I’m convinced it is worthwhile.

Am I telling you to man up? No, we all have our own fears and limits. However I am saying, please consider those who love you.

Nothing embarrassing or id not be discussing it.

I would prefer the PSA test over the other test first. Plus if you have the recal exam and they feel anything you have to wait an extra week or more for the psa test to be done so an added week off stress.

Being a nurse I am not squeamish at all.

I have regular exams for testicular cancer as well.

If there was any question id drop my pants faster than the flash. PSA first though

My neighbour has an enlarged prostate and has been having tests and biopsies etc to determine the next action. Apparently the clinic weighed his prostate and found it to be 125g which is BIG !!
He"s now awaiting the biopsy reports.

Afternoon folks… i sort of look in on this thread now and again, for a read.

I think my last post in the thread was Feb, so a couple of updates since.

I went off to see the quack a couple of months ago in April, due to ( close your ears girls), some pain in the prostate area during sex, and was tender for some days.
The doc asked the Q’s and sent me for another PSA. and a DRE ( the DRE was smooth …apparently thats good), PSA was now 7.1 … which is the lowest for 2 years.

Then later in May for a period, i was getting sometimes an aching, sometimes burning…
In june the aching/burning was worse, and I was diagnosed with Prostatis… a course of anti-biotics and feeling better. + another PSA test, and again in usual bandwith

My doc did say, i probably have a slightly enlarged prostate…but that is normal; as they grow with age.

I have had symptoms that are described in the documentation for Prostate Cancer;
A slower flow … but you get this as you age and prostate grows.
pain/burning in area … prostatitis
small amount of after dribble… came with the prostatitis

but the trouble is, they are also described within documentation for enlarged prostates and Protastitis too.
You can find almost all the symptoms listed, for all of those conditions… So it can scare you witless.

I now use my PSA’s as benchmark… from about 2 years ago a 7.5, then a 7.3, April’s 7.1… and this months 7 as well. I shall go every 6 months… to keep the distance between tests down.

@anon88888878 am getting used to the bloods

that’s my update for now…

Good for you Glenn - your body, your life and you’ve taken control - excellent!! The best thing is you’re being monitored so that, IF, anything nasty should develop in the future - you’ll be right on it.

Yes Simon , fingers crossed.

Something i will say…to the guys…if you feel it’s not quite right down there; talk to ( if you have one) your OH… because if you bottle it up, most likely it will not only prolong the issue; if they feel that there is something wrong, but you don’t say…they cannot be understanding.
If i feel ill personally, i become inward looking and quiet, want to be left on my own… if you dont talk to those close to you, they look for anything as an explanation… you feel better even for biting the bullet…no matter what the outcome is.

PSA test within range.

Although I have been given some "diet " instructions. and have reduced my coffee down from 30 a day to under 10 (most days)
