I bought the cork granules and mixed on site.
There certainly was a fashion for rendered houses. Round here some people remove it thinking stone is more picturesque. Usually you can tell because of (A) quality of stone work (b) the decorative stonework round the window is set forward of the wall, so that it would be flush when the wall was rendered. But rendering doesn’t necessarily mean it is cement.
