My wife and I have an appointment at the prefecture, I would appreciate it if someone could advise us on what documents we need. We have our CdS from 2021, retired, home owners and our appointment is in Perigueux.
We have our photo’s done,
Thanks

For renewal, you will usually need your current carte de sejour, passport, proof of address, recent tax statements, health insurance cover, and evidence of sufficient income or pensions. Property ownership documents can also help. It is wise to bring copies of everything. Each prefecture can vary slightly, so checking the Périgueux website in advance may save time.
Take more photos with you
@kim runs a very good group on Facebook which has everything you need to know.
A renewal of what sort of CdS? The requirements vary.
If you have a post-Brexit withdrawal agreement resident permits (WARP card) the requirements are much lighter. This is linked to to Perigueux préfecture renewal for these cards
If you have a first year carte de séjour as an entrepreneur then much more needed.
I have a 5 yr CDs due for renewal in 2927 based on the fact that I am married to an Irish citizen. If my wife should die before that date would this affect my renewal application
Now that’s what I call long-term planning! ![]()
If you were living legally in another EU country and your EU spouse died before acquiring permanent residence there, you may stay if you had been living there for at least 1 year before they died.
To be able to stay, you must also meet the same conditions for residence as EU nationals.
The reason I’m asking is I’m thinking of getting a five year lease on an electric car now that would take us up to 2031. So if permission to stay is doubtful then maybe I’d be better off getting an HP agreement so at least the car would be mine
When do you arrive at 5 years’ residence? As that’s the important date as after that you are permenent.
edit - I think you arrived as resident spring 2022. So another 14 months.
You should be ok - cutting it a little fine as only 896 years to spare!
I arrived April 2022 and got my CDs in December 22
Which CdS do you hold, it sounds like the ‘married to an EU citizen one, in which case you could ask George1 who has posted much about them? Or anyone, really, if you say which type you have, as well as the length. ![]()
PS, I really, really hope your wife doesn’t die.
Hello Geoffrey. There are strong legal safeguards in place should the unthinkable happen before April 2027. The EU regulations specifically cater for the scenario of the EU spouse passing away prior to the non EU spouse reaching the 5 year permanent residence threshold. You already (partially) qualify on the basis of living with your wife in France for at least a year. The regulations are interpreted to simply require that the non EU spouse themselves has sufficient financial resources and comprehensive medical coverage until (in your case) April 2027..At that 5 year point you become a permanent resident, in your own right, irrespective of whether you have the appropriate EU permanent resident carte de séjour..The conditions of comprehensive medical coverage and sufficient resources then fall away, going forwards.
EU regulation article is below.
Let’s hope the scenario described is totally hypothetical!
Thanks George your help is much appreciated and has provided us with a bit of reassurance. It’s just that we are trying to make some important decisions about our future in France as we’re both getting on a bit!
As others have said, check with the Préfecture because they’ll all have different requirements and these will vary according to your status.
For our first one - ie not your situation - we’ve been asked to take various items (relating to ID: the actual application and submission process was online) and a timbre fiscal for 225 €.
Take EVERYTHING with you, just in case! Even your dog’s passport, if you have one!![]()
Did you not apply to renew online? I did my first renewal in Jun 2025 - all online - and just got called to Dordogne office to have fingerprints taken (Sep) and back to collect our (1st) plastic card in Oct.
Assuming you are renewing under article 50 you are a little behind my wife and I who live in Monbazillac and had our appointment for our fingerprints to be taken this week at the Préfecture de Périgueux. All communication was via https://demarche.numerique.gouv.fr/ and we needed 4 passport photos, our CdSs and had to present at 2 Rue Paul Louis Courier, 24000 PERIGUEUX, a different office to where we picked up our first carte. Note parking is difficult but we found free parking up the hill. The appointment was very quick and efficient and we were told we’d each be issued with a 10 year CdS.
Morning, we’ve done the finger prints bit, now I think we can get the CdS done. I’ll list what I thought we needed, if you think I’ve missed something please tell,
Passports
Current CdS
Photos
Bank statement, French & UK showing pensions
Proof of ownership of property
EDF/SAUR facture
Where in Monbazillac are you, we’re just along from Chateau Poulvère.
Regards
Lyn
