Rules for driving across France. What are they?

Next week some friends are leaving the UK for Dunkirk to travel to family in Luxembourg. It’s a short duration trip for family health reasons so falls within rules for permitted travel, yet they’re keen to know of any potential problems they may encounter. (They already know bringing ham & cheese sandwiches may be a problem!)

Any knowledge or advice you can offer would be great. To help others, I’ll also post a report on their trip when they’ve returned

The rules for driving across France are -
Sick to the speed limits, follow the Code de la Route, be courteous & smile.
If you drive an Audi ignore the above!

Just driven down from home to the Drome, and cut up so many times on the motorways by German reg Audis…one hates to stereotype Audi drivers but sometime hard not to believe they are all plonkers.

I hope you mean just the German ones, not the others. (I have to declare an interest here).

TBH Beemers are worse. But with @anon88169868’s bad news this week I didn’t want to make it worse by mentioning earlier.

Most fun I had was when I had a Volvo (in UK). Even though it was only a SuperDAF one look at its Volvo badge and everyone, just everyone, gave way.

Wonder if @vero gets that effect in her Merc?

BMW drivers certainly have a bad reputation. To what extent it is deserved is harder to say - the surveys are extremely subjective and do no more than canvass (already biased) popular opinion.

I, of course, am kindness, consideration and gentility personified when behind the wheel

Anyway I thought Audi drivers had taken that particular crown.

(but only whilst driving the Toyota Celica)!!! :joy:

Too proud to drive a VW (of which Audis are clones - not like the good old days) too poor to drive a Porsche (which are only posh VWs now too. Just like Bentley). We live in a market segmented hell.

I’m a great admirer of the 2002 (and even more so it’s engine) but the (tail happy) 320 spawned the old what’s the difference between a BMW and a hedgehog joke, the pricks are on the inside of a BMW :slightly_smiling_face: No offence intended.

On a more serious note, I’m going to watch this when I have a chance… Bit of a secretive/dodgy crowd own a large chunk of BM.

Super rally cars in their day.

And World class cheats…

No more than today with the “self charging hybrid” slogan. Every bloody hybrid is self charging.

One has to admire their chutzpah :slightly_smiling_face:

Joke back in the day was that a Mercedes had the ‘Star’ on the bonnet to give
better aim for pensioners crossing the road…

I get some boy racers at lights deciding they have to zoom away much faster than I do (sometimes they even manage), otherwise no problem - people may however leave me alone because I am usually singing at the top of my lungs while doing percussion on my steering wheel and possibly look loopy.
If you buy a Mercedes you actually have to buy the ‘how to be a twat’ handbook as an extra, it’s free when you buy an Audi.

I’m delighted to have caused you all to have some chatty fun midst covid.
I’ll tell my mate to take an i-spy book with him and log all the numpty overtakers.
Maybe someone needs to open a book on the odds between the likely brand winners?

Always fancied a GT-4 but could never afford one - a good example will still be a tidy sum for what is now at least a 23 year old car.

Since bmw owners switched to driving Tesla instead they are the new idiot drivers now

OK getting back to the post, there aren’t any restrictions driving across France, the problems are comming into France (covid) and not bringing anything that you’re not allowed to (brexit).

The info’s on the government site, updated 21/05/2021 and according to that you need to have a very goood reason for entering France from outside the EU (UK):

toute entrée en France et toute sortie de notre territoire à destination ou en provenance d’un pays extérieur à l’Union européenne est interdite, sauf motif impérieux.

more info here

England has been on the very short list of countries from which people can come without giving reason, already for some weeks now.

That’s good to know, Karen, so they’re still treating the UK as if it were within the EU (according to the French government info) ?

Edit; Yes, just found this on the government’s diplomatic site which is conflicting advice to the other government site (updated on the 21/05) which doesn’t take into consideration the UK’s decision to allow foreign travel from the 17/05! Right had/left hand…!

Reasons needed to travel within the UK or to leave it are not the French government’s problem.

France has had the welcone mat out for people arriving from the UK for weeks needing just a PCR test taken 72 hours or less ahead of the official leaving time of whatever transport method (eg flight time, ferry time, Eurotunnel departure time) of your transport that will land in France.

France has also said they will give free PCR tests to visitors to France this summer (presumably as many of their countries they are returning to will require them)although they haven’t stated how the specifics will work yet.

Obviously not, but we’re talking about travelling in France and entering France which is why I got the info from the horse’s mouth: French gov sites which, I admit, are conflicting! But yes, PCR test of less than 72 hours :+1:

And if anybody’s got a cristal ball to hand… any idea/rumours if the quanrantine requirements will still be in place in the UK mid July. My mum’s having her 80th birthday bash and I haven’t seen her or any family for a couple of years but looking at the current quarantine rules I’d have to stay put at one address from the moment i arrive to the moment I leave (as I’d probably only go for the weekend due to work)
