Are you presuming that all the Jews in the UK support Zionism?

No, just asking.
But I’d suspect there might be social pressure to support Israel’s actions if someone is Jewish.

Steady on, John!

I think it would be a great first step if the Western nations who caused this mess last century acknowledged their role and asked for forgiveness. There’s a reason there are so many dead straight borders in the Middle East and Africa. It’s gin soaked colonials with rulers!

At some point there has to be some truth and reconciliation, followed by a just settlement. The Israeli far right doesn’t want it and neither does Hamas. I suspect the answer in the end will be contrition and lots of money. That is, if Israel hasn’t already recruited several generations of Hamas fighters with its actions.

Mind you, I can’t see a western politician anywhere with the skill, wisdom and imagination to find a diplomatic solution. We need a Nelson Mandela figure.

You might be right, a wonderful man, Mandela, but I don’t think he had many borders to sort out did he? He just wanted equal treatment for everybody.

He led a massive reconciliation and peaceful transfer of power after years of oppression by the white regime. You probably shouldn’t take it too literally though. I just meant a great statesman.

Israel has hit Iran Iraq and Syria today . MSM seem to be playing this down but the people and families hurt or killed like those in Palestine will never forget.

I’d like to correct the above, drones were intercepted by Iran before reaching their targets so no casualties this time !

Thanks Tim, I agree with most of what you’ve written but I think a lasting peace does mean dismantling/reconfiguring the Israel of today. Twenty years ago a two state solution would have been a lot simpler, now by the time it could be agreed the West bank will have been overrun. So, to my simple mind there are three scenarios.

1 - Isreal carries on as it is, an apartheid state annexing Palestinian land. This is the preferred option for the far right/religious headbangers, but there’s no chance of regional peace down this route.
2- Isreal continues its expansion but becomes a pluralist state with equality for all. The Zionists won’t accept this option and I feel there is a deep rooted contempt in Israeli society for what they see as their less productive Arab citizens, which will be hard to overcome. This will lead to internal tensions - is that peace?
3 - A two state solution. That must entail a degree of dismantling “settlements”. The far right/religious headbangers would be very unhappy, the “settlers” would be very unhappy, and given the support they get from the IDF reservists in their atrocities I suspect a chunk of Israeli society would be unhappy too.

So none of the options I can think of involve “business as usual” for the State of Israel.

Sadly, I agree with all of that John, what a bloody prospect, literally.

That’s simply not a viable option and wouldn’t have any support save from a few Middle Eastern nations.

I think we just have to accept that the region faces years of turmoil until the two state option can re-visited.

Oh no we don’t Tim, to “accept” is to be complicit. I will never accept Israeli savagery against children such as the little girl above.

That’s a bit unfair John, I can’t change what’s happening in Gaza so have to accept that until Netunyahu is persuaded to stop innocent people will continue to be killed.

Every week there are protesters in Norwich shouting ‘ceasefire now’ and ‘free Palestine’, if I don’t join in does that really make me complicit in the killing of children?

Or a FREE SCOTLAND!

I seem to recall that Scotland made a choice quite recently.

No Tim, of course it doesn’t. But I can’t express adequately how much this murdering and starving of children affects me, I find it difficult to understand why others are not as affected :slightly_frowning_face:

There are many things in life that appal us John but 99% of the time we are powerless to do anything about it, acceptance doesn’t imply we don’t care or are not affected by what we see.
