Selling a UK car

Just to be clear, I’m not interested in buying your car, I’m interested in data points for reference :+1:

Yes, enormous :face_with_hand_over_mouth: Why would any normal, sensible person buy RHD in Europe or LHD in the UK? A good rule of thumb in my experience is a RHD in France is worth SFA and visa versa. That’s why, for example, in the past I’ve ordered a LHD from the UK for export and traded in my RHD against it.

You can find LHD bargains in the UK but bloody Brexit has screwed that up a bit, However most of these LHDs (excluding North America ones) were originally imported from Europe and already have taxes paid, so you don’t have to pay again to reimport. Putting the paper trail together might be a bit challenging, :slightly_smiling_face: But if one did there are savings to be made.

Interesting comment, but not terribly data based  Yesterday I took a look on leboncoin, and a little surprised at how many rhd cars advertised. I was also speaking to a friend yesterday who sold his rhd car previously in France and he said he actually had quite a number of folks interested, including a couple of UK folks who mentioned they felt more comfortable in a rhd vehicle. And as for lhd in UK, I do remember looking years ago at available stock that a specialist lhd company was selling in the UK and must say, I didn’t find them to be bargains. In fact on the contrary, I found them a tad pricey versus their rhd equivalents, but maybe still lower cost than in France, where the secondhand car values are relatively high. Would be great if anyone actually has real figures for what they sold for versus UK/France values, as someone somewhere must have done this:grin:

I could have sold my RHD Ford Transit many times over and for more than it’s worth in the UK but brought it back with me as I’ll need it for the immediate future.

I think it’s very much to do with the relatively high secondhand vehicle prices in France and the relatively low prices in UK. So yes, a rhd wont go for as much as a lhd equivalent in France obviously, but nevertheless may still be a higher price than in the IK

For the former I would suggest, either because it’s cheap, or because it’s a rare model in France and has a certain cachet. For the latter, perhaps because the buyer expects to do a lot of driving in mainland Europe, or again because the model is hard to find in LHD.

I know a couple of Brits living in the UK who always buy a LHD camping car as they spend a lot of time in Europe.

Not true.
As @tim17 experienced with his transit.
I brought my ford transit and Focus C Max to France in 2008.
The Focus was 10 years old in 2016 when I sold it here for €2000 when its worth in the UK was less than half that. The lady who bought it preferred RHD.
In 2020 I sold my 16 year old transit for €2000 and was bombarded with enquiries. It would have fetched scrap value in UK. I saw the same transit for sale a few weeks ago for €1800.
Perhaps my examples are not commonplace but are true examples that RHD RHD vehicles are nt worth SFA in a LHD country.
Of course both sales went to UK nationals but in both cases the vehicle remained in France.

One lives and learns. Though my first car (apart from a short dalliance with an NSU TTS) was a LHD Autobianchi A112 in the UK and I had a LHD GTI there for while too, now I couldn’t have a WHD (wrong hand drive) as my daily driver, it’s a pain in the bottom at car parks etc. I don’t mind driving WHD when on temporary trips but permanently, no way.

WHD - that’s the first time I’ve heard that, and it did make me smile

When buying my LHD car shortly after arriving, I enquired about part exchanging my RHD Merc… the guy just laughed out loud. When he realised I was being serious, he replied with a resolute, “Non!”.

Yes can imagine trading it in at a dealership isn’t possible as they must operate under clear guidelines and reselling for them just isn’t worth the effort. If selling rhd, privately is the only way to go.

I am trying to sell a RHD MX5 at the moment via LeBonCoin and the price seems to need to be approx 40% of the LHD equivalent. My car I will have to accept 6k€ whereas the LHD equivalent is 13-14k€.

How do you arrive at the 6k figure? Is that the best offer you received?

As it’s a UK car, what would be the approx value in UK?

A combination of offers and looking at others.

Interestingly the 6k€ figure is actually more than it would be in uk due to scarcity here. In UK there are many of them and the price is lower.

Yes, so although lower than the French market, still worth selling here versus UK. Which is precisely what I’m very quickly understanding. UK prices seems crazily low versus here. Pity Brexit stepped in!

I now would not buy a car in UK to bring to France (there may be the odd exception) .

No, the duties now kill that option unfortunately. A pity as personally I don’t have any issues driving a rhd.

That is such a gorgeous car. If I had 6k it’d be in your pocket by now!

Hi @_Brian you should have had a drive of it when you were over! I won’t part with it for less I would rather just keep it - but hopefully moving house so need to scrape funds together from all directions!
