Memories. For the last 15 years we took delivery of 16 m3 of beautiful seasoned ready to burn oak from our local woodyard. During that time the cost per year rose fron 500 to 750 euros. The firewood provided all our heating and hot water for the season.
I enjoyed stacking, cutting and fueling our log burner and the satisfaction of seeing it burn brightly.
Time marches on and pleasures become a chore and the body starts to complain.
Now living in a new A rated house with solar panels, gas condensing boiler and indoor temperatures that didnt drop below 20 degrees upstairs without the heating coming on, life is good again.
Given my time again I would do the firewood thing all over again but that was then and this is now.
The other bonus we now have are dust free surfaces which makes you realise how many particles are airborne to breathe in when living in a wood fired house.
I am the same down here in the PO. No more deliveries to barrow, cut and stack which took me on my own two days usually, no more carting indoors, cleaning the stove, getting a sweep in every year and as you say, no more dust and smoke making the inside of the house dirty, if you can see it for some time until it builds up. I wonder how much we actually ingested over that 30 year period of having a wood burner.
That’s the part I test regularly John both at mine and friends and relatives. Years back friends in a rural setting had that dust on surfaces issue. SIL had an open fire long before I was testing. Truly the modern clean burn stoves are way better and particle levels really low. As I have often said, vacuuming your home with a non sealed vacuum like a Henry sends my air monitor off it’s chart. Frying a breakfast without the lid on the pan likewise but for a shorter time.
I used to sustainability cut at least 20 m3/year from our own forest when we lived in the Creuse, and at one stage had over 100 m3 in various stages of seasoning. I needed a spreadsheet to manage it

However It isnt just about the bioler, underfloor insulation is 400mm thick, 400mm thick wall with 200mm insulated cavity, 400mm loft insulation and thermal insulating external doors and windows.
It is a newly built UK house complying with latest building regulations.
A far cry from my early years in the industry when literally none of these energy saving methods were employed.
We left to joy of running old French homes last year after 33 years.

Air exchangers in bathroom, ensuite, cloakroom and utility all vented to exterior. Kitchen extraction ditto. All windows include mechanical ventilation.
