A few weeks back it was Philip Schofield, now it’s a ‘well known’ BBC presenter who has hit the news. Is there nothing else happening in the world ? What is the fascination by the UK public of tv personalities ?

Just watched Life of Brian earlier, always good for belly laughs. The stoning scene is a bit like this latest scandal,people get fascinated by seeing others suffer. I remember reading about Cliff Richard was hounded, hadhis home searched and forced him to quit public life, all lies and made up end of day on say so of some other person.
I’ve no idea and don’t really care, but nevertheless am slightly intrigued by the media’s persistent use of the phrase, ‘young person.’ OTOH even if I knew the name of the alleged offender, it’d probably mean nothing because unlike OH, I stopped listening to the BBC several years ago

I don’t think it’s the UK public - it’s the tabloid press who seek to create and encourage a 21st century British Enragés in order to foment general unrest.

Except that if it WASN’T the UK public, then no one would read the tabloid press and they’d stop doing it. Sadly, as we see, that’s not the case.

Not only the British press, the news channels I watch have had it as the lead story for a couple of days.
If you throw fat pellets to chickens they will eat the fat in preference to a balanced, foraged diet and become accustomed to it.

Ever since the full extent of Jimmy Savile’s crimes came out the general public have become more interested and less tolerant of the misdemeanours of people in the public eye. The media have merely fed the interest with the current BBC presenter scandal being the latest in a long line of such stories.
Obviously, in the scale of things the story should not be the lead on any news programme but as with the Schofield affair the behaviour of the employers of these individuals has added to the perceived importance of the story.

People seem to follow issues for which they have feelings. Papers write about anything that people, many, will be likely to follow. Doesn’t validate the subject but does distract readers from their own issues.
Concern for the missing 2 year old petit Emile is not the same as schadenfreude in the disgrace of a celebrity. I also suspect the tabloids are in particular gunning for the BBC.

Hmmm you mean like rival networks and the Murdoch empire? Our wonderful torry government were asking Murdoch about where the future of the BBC was??? So pay per view increases yet further.
I noticed the bizarre reported fact that you can legally shag a 16 year old of either sex but if you dare to send to a 17 year old, or ask for, a picture in boxer shorts the world caves in in condemnation.
I think more questions need to be asked about the parents in this case. Unless it is a fact that this young person has, in the current parlance, learning difficulties, then what are they on? He is 20 years old for goodness’ sake. At that age I had been round the world without Mum and Dad at least once.
I had also been propositioned by an attractive woman more than twice my age and, although flattered, had fled in terror. But I did not complain to Mummy, or the bloody Sun. Yes, I know, it was the Daily Herald then and a much different kettle of fish.

David those were the good old days, (still the best), We knew what was right and wrong, were brought up with respect and a certain amount of discipline. There seems to be an age group that frankly dont know their arse from their elbow, need their phones unsticking from their mitts, and work instructions for everything they do. Dont despair, we are past that.

I thnk many people are fascinated by this sort of thing, actually, though it is perhaps the result of an education which encouraged a fascination with sex and particularly its darker edges. But it’s very trying, hearing exactly the same speculation (because there are no new facts) day after day.

For me the fascination isn’t so much about what has been going on, who does, or the implications, good bad or otherwise, we don’t know yet, but who on earth is this presenter who I/we are probably very familiar with as a well-known TV personality.
Gossip has always been and will always be around. Who is he for heaven’s sake?
This is a bit like one of those tunes you can’t get out of your head!
Reminds me of those few years where super injunctions were all the rage (they’re sadly coming back again ) when we all knew lots about certain people but weren’t even allowed to acknowledge that there was anything to know about them let alone what that was and that they’d gone to court to stop us discussing what we already knew. Streisand effect gone into overdrive at that time which was why they fell out of favour for some time.
