Can we keep this civil please?
I don’t want to have to keep suspending people!
One could argue that if the pendulum is swinging in such extreme ways from “ultra-woke” to “ultra-non-woke”, it’s due to the fact that sensible, pragmatic exchanges occur less and less. The silent majority gets terrified of engaging one way or another if no discussion is allowed due to not being part of the group being discussed.
That’s where some parts of ultra-woke-ism were extreme, in that you couldn’t comment if you weren’t part of the “lived truth”. Or you can’t comment on the US because you’re not american… I guess the US never meddles in anyone else’s business
Oh. Dear. God
What happened in Germany in the 1930’s is very reminiscent of the unbelieveably out of touch world you seem to live in.
It’s chilling walking around my parents’ very peaceful chic bourgeois neighbourhood in Germany and seeing the Stolpersteine (see below if you don’t know them) in front of the beautiful 19th century houses (and indeed throughout the old town centre too).
The link does work.
May have posted on this before, but worth repeating. A very poignant art project:-
judyk, please stick around on SF. I have things to say once I get my thoughts in order and I think you and I can bring some reality to the discussion, you from your home in France and me from mine in the US. Nobody is going to change mikep’s mind, but maybe we can counter some of the obvious falsehoods.
I love that!
Brilliant
The ironic, and very sad thing about the Stolpersteine is that such a thing is only really possible because of the fanatical record keeping of the third reich. (I refuse to capitalise it)
Yes, horror turned into accounting, it’s what I think of when Hannah Arendt talks about the banality of evil. So awful.
We call it the Junk Drawer. It’s not a proper Cabinet…
I think most of the people who voted for Trump always vote Republican, a very large number just didn’t want a black woman as president, and, from seeing lots of interviews, I think a lot, if not most of the rest, did so because they felt they had been financially better off under T’s first presidency than under Biden, and didn’t consider mitigating factors like Covid and Ukraine. It wasn’t because of his anti-woke policies etc.
It’s the economy, stupid!
Looks like it’ll take some time before the Dems understand why they lost.
One could equally claim that it’ll take some time before Americans understand why they lost.
I’m not American, so I’ll say, less time.
I agree. No winners - well with the exception of the wealthy.
Something I think people outside the USA are often unaware of is how a steady drumbeat of talk radio and Fox News since the 1990s has taken its toll on Democrats. Both these media denigrated Democrats and boosted right-wing politicians and later the new-style Trump Republicans. When Fox News became part of the basic cable package, it out-competed traditional straight-news programs with its blend of glamorous women, entertainment, and provocative opinions. Without any real news to counter what they saw on Fox, many viewers were convinced that they were now well informed and from then on they trusted only Fox for news, not recognizing that everything on Fox is slanted. Fox tapped into their grievances or created new ones for them to feel aggrieved by. Once you are surrounded by friends, coworkers, and even family who drank the Kool-Aid, it’s hard not to fall into their way of thinking. We know staunch Democrats who switched parties and became Republicans (not traditional Republicans, but Trump supporters) in recent years.
Not so decisive. The final tally indicates that he did not win by the decisive margin, you believe. He
got less than 50% of the popular vote. The gerrymandering of the past will result in an Electoral College victory and not a popular vote victory.
The media can’t be blamed for this result, the Democrats lost because of Biden, a weak (and late replacement) and the fact that they have consistently ignored the middle and lower classes for years.
Sorry but a golden age under a convicted felon & proven liar who thinks putting a vaccine denier in charge of health is a good thing? Never!
