Squatting Goats

Hi, we arrived back at our home in France on Friday to find two alpine goats had taken up residence on our Land. We spoke with the neighbours and it appears they belong to a local farmer who doesn’t pen them in properly and generally does not care. We have tried to contact him with no success. They have also been in other neighbours gardens. They absolutely stink and have damaged our property - both the house and garden. We went to the Mairie who knew of him but were not sure what to do. Our neighbour is head of the chasse and came to scare them off but they just came back. What can we do? I just want them off my property! The property is fenced but they just jump over and we tried to chase them but we have 20 acres so there is too much space for them to run. Help please.

Get a (big) dog

You need to get in contact with the owner - his insurance will be liable for any damage caused.

Eat them. Goat stew anyone ?

I’m not so much worried about the damage so far I just want rid. The owner says he can’t catch them. Can I shoot them?

A lovely Jamaican goat curry, yum.

I think France has laws about that.

Encourage them to join the chasse?

I’m not sure a couple of inebriated goats, armed with rifles … actually, as long as you could watch from a safe distance, it might be fun.

Either contact local fourrière yourself or ask the Marie to. They are responsible for errant animals. And don’t shoot them as a) you then have the problem of what to do with the carcasses and b) the owner will exaggerate their value and claim that against you.

No you can’t, at least, not without being liable vis-à-vis the owner.

Although the above describes what to do for cats and dogs, it is substantially the same for any errant animal.

Or, if they are not Billies (not @Billy’s) milk them and make some chevre cheese. Not my taste but my dog loves it and he gets his morning pill every day inside a big lump.

Apparently they smell, therefore they must be Billies/male goats so milking isn’t an option…

Females & castrated males do not smell.

Thank you, most interesting.

Oh they absolutely stink!

I first had goat curry in a ramshakle roadside restaurant in Jamaica in the 1980’s. As we were sitting in the restaurant, after we’d ordered the goat curry, a battered pickup truck arrived outside with a tethered goat in the back. The goat was untied and led into the back of the restaurant. A few minutes later the guy came out and drove away. Fifteen minutes later the curry arrived .

I always thought it was curry goat in Jamaica (goat curry is Indian)

I first ate it at a friends family home in Jamaica, many, many years ago, my first real experience of soul food and I’ve loved it ever since.

As long as its goat meat and Jamaican, I don’t mind how it’s said

I know threads drift but the original poster must be exasperated at the turn this one has taken.
I’m afraid I have no advice to offer other than speak to M or Mme Le Maire.
