The fun of importing UK 2nd Hand Car to France post Brexit

Hello Mat, wish I had known that. Have just been to the Douanes and have to go back with the car. Thought it was just me but obviously not.

Yep
take the car and all docs available to the douanes

Really not much point trying to find an iffy/cheaper way through the system
why gamble (unless you can afford to lose ???)
Follow the system step by step
and it costs whatever it costs

In my case I dont think they knew whether or not I had the car with me as I just parked up then went in the office - I don’t know if they even saw the car from a distance.

They had asked me to bring the car with me in an email exchange.

Thought it was because I didn’t know what the car was worth. I have had it 4 years and it’s too old for modern valuations but not old enough for classic valuations. It also needs work so is probably worth very little but I love it!

Perhaps try WeBuyAnyCar to get a low end valuation to give you an idea.

Good idea, thanks Mat.

If you have the purchase paperwork, they’ll probably accept that value (or less as it’s older)
be interesting to find our how they react, anyway

ÂŁ150 It only cost ÂŁ668 to transport it, 350 euro for CoC, 175 euro so far for parts with more to buy yet. It must be love.

They want to look at the chassis number.

Thank you for your replies everyone.

I simply don’t know the process, so I’m gathering information from people who do.

This is translated from the Douanes own site - You have bought a vehicle:

"The value used is the transaction price shown on the invoice, provided that this actually represents the sum you paid to the seller. In the case of a purchase from a private individual, the invoice is replaced by a certificate of sale signed by the holder of the circulation document and stating the transfer price.

The customs service retains the power to assess the declared value within the limits laid down by the regulations.

You have an invoice, the amount of which is contested by the customs service for the purposes of determining the customs value. In this case, the customs value will be determined according to the valuation methods used in the context of a vehicle transfer without purchase.
You have not purchased your vehicle:

The value retained is determined by reference to :

to the quotation of specialised newspapers (such as Argus, Blue Book, Camping-car magazine, Officiel du Cycle et du Motocycle) if your vehicle is listed there;
or, if not, to the catalogue price of new vehicles or to the value of similar vehicles.
To these reference values, a fixed obsolescence coefficient may be applied, which varies according to the type and age of the vehicle and the quotation document used (for example, the value of a car taken from the Argus is reduced by 15%);
or an appraisal of the vehicle.

When the reference prices used are “price including import duties and taxes” or “on the French domestic market”, the amount corresponding to duties and taxes must be deducted from the price used, according to the elimination coefficients available from the customs services (see Articles 32 and 33 of the Community Customs Code, available on the Legifrance website".

That all makes sense.

Took her for CT today and as expected she failed. However it wasn’t as bad as it might have been. Just a little welding, new wiper arm and blade and fog light on wrong side. Is it okay to fit a fog light on the correct side and take the bulb out of the cluster on the other side? Are there any rules governing this - minimum, maximum height from the ground, etc? There don’t seem to be any lhd clusters in stock.

You may find the fog light location is a minor issue that if the rest is sorted it will pass without moving it - similar to a MOT advisory. (this was the case for my car recently)

I did not move my fog light and it now has a CT issued 2 months ago.

Failed on the red bit, green part was advisories.

Unfortunately it has been put as a majeure: source lumineuse defectueuse ou manquante: visibilite fortement reduite ARG. He also said it needed to be on the other side. I did notice on the picture of your lovely car that your fog light had not been moved.

Not quite so lovely - I am working on the rust today - there is plenty to choose from!

Oh dear, good luck with that.

Have now received Certificat Provisoire d’Immatriculation for both my imports. Both have errors: typo on my surname and slight misspelling on Denomination commerciale. Just wanted to correct them before actual Carte Grise is printed but it seems I have to send more supporting documents! Is this really necessary? Should I wait for Carte Grise and then do it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Personally, I reckon it would be best to get it corrected now before the actual CG gets printed.

You’ll have to send more supporting documents in any case and you might well be charged a Fee if you leave it until the Actual CG arrives.
I’ve no idea, but it seems reasonable to me since Printing costs money and by not notifying them now, you will be incurring 2 lots of printing costs.

You’ve got the Provisoire and it’s not correct
so do the necessary, now, is my advice.
