BFM had a report from Sommières earlier. The reporter was in a car park where the water had come up near the top of the wheels of the vehicles in there. It’s hard to imagine that not so long ago we were complaining about the heat, isn’t it?
Yesterday I was driving in the rain through Sommières and had the same though about the hart and sunshine.
Today, I need to take a small detour to avoid the road closure….
It’s a bit damp I agree.
I hate to go against the general moan but here in the north Dordogne we have had reasonable rainfall and no snow along with occasional morning fog for more than a month, ably rewarding our decision so many years ago to settle here for life. ![]()
At this very moment it is foggy below in the valley, misty up here on the hill, with the golden orb rising in the east. ![]()
Some friends are going by train to Barcelona today and it’s two and a half hours late atm. One train to Perp is four hours late. They said it’s due to flooding and most of our trains come through the Hérault.
According to The Connexion ‘Temperatures will drop to nearly 5°C colder than seasonal averages this Christmas week’.
Shall have to make sure the garden tap is well wrapped up.
The Lot’s burst its banks around the next village upstream and there’s lots(!) of these signs -
Meanwhile our road is now flooded at the other end of the village and closed to through traffic with ‘SAUF RIVERAINS’ signs and lots of flashing lights. Below is the river at our end late this afternoon
Fortunately, unlike the the house in the photo, we’re on a rocky outcrop a few metres above the road. The builders of the oldest houses in the village grabbed the safest sites - those closest to the chateau and the highest above the river.
Update: Have just been out see I might need to move the car to higher ground (rather than waiting for a knock in the middle of the night) and it looks like the river is no longer rising.
I took this photo earlier today from the motorway on the way back from Pezenas. Everywhere just looks like a massive lake - incredible. The large parking lot on the outskirts of the town, which is covered by solar panels, also looked like a lake. And worse still, there were a few cars in the middle of it with water half way up the cars - serious damage ![]()
Seems that the Herault has burst its banks - so many low lying areas around there, it could/has spread a long way. On a happier note it looks like the homes at the other end of our village have been spared.
Indeed that’s exactly what’s happened. Rather scary if you happen to live near the river. Can’t imagine the pain of being flooded in the house, and just before the ‘happy’ Xmas period. Roll on the sunshine!
There was a big red warning about Herault on Meteo.fr today. I hope everyone is dry and safe tonight and in days to come.
Looks like it’s going to be freezing in Cussy over the next few nights.
Looked nasty in the Hérault last night on the news and felt so sorry for the folks flooded out especially the restaurants who hoped to make up some profit over xmas. Lots of snow in the Aveyron.
Cold but sunny here in south Holland ![]()

Rained non stop here for 48 hours, but dry at the moment. We seem to be just below the snow line with just a smattering, but quite a bit only a few kms up the road. We’re due snow here on Christmas day, which I haven’t seen for quite a few years. Hope all in Hérault are OK.
Are they ice-skating on the canals yet?
Sud-Angleterre is dry and sunny today and tomorrow, but getting colder, we are having a charming breeze from the direction of Belarus which I think is what you’ve got too, and it’s chilling out Northern France as well…
Thankfully it’s only high up around here, OTOH lower down there’s a lot of water, but at least our village flood has receded without any damage.
Hope those of you who are flooded out have already done your Christmas shopping. ![]()
We’re still on orange alert for flooding. @Shiba BFM are saying that the river in Rivesaltes has risen a metre in 3 hours.
Yes. It’s heaving down and all the “Gues” have been shut across the Tet and the Agly since yesterday morning. The abundance of snow on the mountains doesn’t help the situation either as the water flows down here through the dam at Vinça and into the Tet and Agly.My son in the next commune next to the Agly and Bourdigou behind his garden received a Tsunami alert on both their mobiles yesterday as the coast is being battered and that commune has several rivers/streams running straight down onto the beach. My garden is flooded in places as we are still finding the levels as the work progresses because the now insolvent builders, just left it in a mess or I could pay €15,000 to have it levelled which is a job we are doing ourselves for a fraction of that including underground pipe laying into the flood basin and I know its a good job especially as I kept OH laser levels. DIL has to pick her parents up at the airport tonight when the Paris commuter arrives so will probably go down the dual carriageway rather than past my house which is halfway there but is country and was flooding last night when I came home at 21h.
Take care, shiba and bon courage to your DiL. We’ve had crashing waves and in the night they were hitting the sea wall. The council put barriers in all the gaps in the sea wall in October, so no water came onto the seafront.
BFM has just shown a view of Collioure looking towards the italianate bell tower, it looks wild there.
While listening to LBC the other day, the presenter Matthew Wright, turned 60, signed off with a quick comment about his new battery heated jacket. He loves it and recommended buying one.
I like the idea as the cold weather puts me off from doing outdoor tasks. I like the look of this one.
Anyone got a heated jacket? Does it work?
