Good idea.
Or a sign (in French) that says “We’ve left. We are at Hotel XXX” with your name and mobile number. This might avoid them being forced to break down your door to ensure you have left, meaning your house will be more secure and you won’t have a door to replace.

Thank you all for your well wishes and advice.
We’ are now comfortably ensconced in a hotel with other “refugees” from the area. Hotel manager over the moon with his unexpected occupancy rate boost 
We were lucky, the fire went away from us and the vineyards we’re surrounded by are a natural firebreak. But there is a forest opposite our house and things could have been very different. When we left we found two police cars blocking entry to our route and two CRS vans with about ten officers blocking the next roundabout. There were 615 pompiers fighting the blaze. They don’t do things by half, thank goodness.
The neighbours aged pal in Taradeau lost her garden, but the house is still standing, as they put it. Others were’t so fortunate.

Yes, very important point. Don’t want anyone risking their life to rescue an empty house. We told our neighbours before we left so that if there was an evacuation they could inform the authorities we were safe. We also, as advised, left the gate on manual.

My (about to turn 92 this year) dad nearly lost his house in 2022 as the field the other side of the rail line that runs at the end of the garden caught fire and engulfed several houses in the summer of 2022.
The garage was burnt down, quite how the house survived I honestly do not know. Naturally the old twit did not bother telling me any of this until I discovered it much later (OK we are not close, indeed at loggerheads much of the time, but even so FFS 
).

Grim times, being almost surrounded by trees I rely on the SW prevailing wind to blow any fire away from me as almost all the trees are N and E of me.

Sorry but gave me the image of Fred Flinstone’s car only made out of rock. Hope to the OP they are safe and sound with no damage, these fires are really frightening even many kms distant as they can move fast and gather size.

Saw it on the national news at 20h, looked horrific and wonder if it/was another arsonist out for kicks. Glad you and your property are saved.
