We are fine thanks Vero. Driving by the scorched areas this morning we were amazed at how the pompiers got such a large area under control so quickly. They’re very brave and very disciplined.
I knew buying all those calendars would pay off one day.

I know what you mean. After the pompiers had dug me out of the forest, including getting stuck in the field once they had loaded me they were very considerate all the 50 kms to hospital in Perigueux and I arrived back home by taxi in the evening, a pompier was at my neighbours’ (he retired as a pompier and his son is a professional one in Paris).
Then the man came over to me and I thought how thoughtful that they should turn up to check on me after all they had already done. Then I discovered that that wasn’t the reason he was there at all, as he handed me a callendrier. 
Nevertheless, in place of the normal 20 euros I give them I was so grateful that I emptied my wallet into his hand. All €60 of it.

It’s terrible, dangerous and takes years to recover.
A sad point to make is that nearly all fires are caused by people. Some of these people are the pompiers themselves. I believe that the recent fire near Paris has seen two arrested.

There have been a lot of arrests made within the past week. Down here, the culprit(s) were caught within days and one actually gave himself up. All need psychiatric help it seems and many are volunteer pompiers too.
It’s something I can’t get my head round at all. Our electrician is due here soon and is a volunteer pompier, I must ask him if he has any idea.
I saw a headline recently that 59 people have been arrested in various departements.

I think to be a pompier you must have some affinity with fire, and perhaps the power of fire becomes addictive?

I imagine the stress of that job may affect people adversely too.
Not excusing arson, but it may explain it in some cases.
It’s often extra pay.
Wasn’t that the plot of Backdraft?
They’re mostly not paid, just have tax indemnities and it’s a very small amount all things considered. I honestly doubt they’re doing it for financial reasons.
