We do exactly the same. We treat them like a dangerous item. Never did with ordinary secateurs.
I have read the same about leeks. I have replanted many bases of stems with the roots. The best I have got is a short bit of stem, which took forever. Best to either just plant lots or grow ‘perpetual’ varieties.
Thanks for the feedback, I am just experimenting.
I’ve got some home saved leek seed I’m experimenting with, if it germinates I’ll send you some.
You are a gentleman. Thank you.
They have germinated, would you also like some globe artichoke seeds, I’ll send some more Bazoches too.
That’s great. Thank you. I have just installed heating in my “green house”. Do you bring them on as seedlings then plant them out or do you sow direct in situ?
I sow a light sprinkling, in deep pots, germinate in doors, then into the cellar under lights, and have a fan going for a few hours a day to strengthen them, I prune them when they get to about 4-5’´, when pencil size I plant out, this year I’ll do the same but not keep them in the cellar for as long when I think they are strong enough they’ll go into the poly tunnel until pencil size.
Good info, thanks. Will be interesting to see how they turn out.
Just arrived. I will start them off this afternoon and let you know how I get on. Many thanks.
