Hi, not sure what category this might fall into… We are second home owners and have a CA account with a bank card that includes travel insurance as one of the benefits. I’m dubious about this being good enough cover on its own especially outside France, and am curious to know whether anyone here has ever made a claim under this insurance, and if so, how you fared? Thanks.
Good question !
I can’t speak about France but we have travel insurance through the Nationwide. We have to supplement it due to various ailments and pills taken. The trouble with insurance is you don’t know how good, or bad, it is until you need it and so far,
we haven’t.
Especially now it’s Aviva and it’s costing more than before. I wrote to Nationwide to try and get a statement read for the AGM that being a mutual society they should seek out a mutual insurer.
We had it as part of the initial package with CA many years ago. The only thing I remember is that when we did try to claim for something we had not paid with our CA card so the insurance wouldn’t cover this.
Presumably the adresses is your UK address?
I enquired with my CA branch last year for insurance to visit my family in Nashville and they wanted an arm and a leg and me to take out another bank card twice the cost of the current debit one which suits my needs. I then went online to my vehicle insurers Groupama and within half an hour had top notch insurance for one million dollars for health, canceled flights and lost property at a cost of under €250. Luckily did not need to use any of it but for the cost it was worth it and have been a customer of theirs for twenty years. The insurance covered the current daily cost of medical costs that would occur at the time of needing it. I have no medical issues at all, no medication being taken so t suited me.
You should be able to find out exactly what IS covered (and what limitations) and what ISNT covered by asking your CA Bank/Branch. Either online or face to face. Then you can make an informed choice …
I’m wondering why you are “dubious”.. ???
Because assumption is the mother of all cock ups.
I love that you are so optimistic about the qualities of employees! I can’t count the number of times I have been told two different things by staff at the same place, or have given different interpretations of written statements,
Our latest skirmish with CA involved them opening an account with conditions didn’t suit us and only spotted by chance after the event, and which was not what we had instructed in writing. It cost them €200 in compensation and one hopes an employee sent to do some more training.
You sued CA? Respect. Wish I had thought of that when they diddled us. Lies, damned lies and outrageous lies, they gave us the full house.
How did you get the compensation Jane? from CA voluntarily or did you have to go to mediator etc.
I suspect the OP will find that as they are not a French resident the insurance technically wouldn’t cover them. I have CA insurance included with my bank card and there are so many requirements and exclusions I don’t count it as insurance.
I’d take the Nationwide insurance in the UK underwritten by Aviva though as had good feedback on them being fair and paying out.
The CA insurance is based on one’s home address. So don’t have to be French resident.
We didn’t sue CA, just threatened it with a mise en demeure letter. In moments like that I channel my mother who may have only been 5ft 3", but could be formidable.
When we first had our our CA Gold Card, the CA employee discussed with us what was included. At a face to face meeting, all was clearly explained and we were given documents to read and take away (for future reference).
Those documents were in French, I thought I had understood but still asked a French friend to check things out to ensure that I was not mistaken.
Having said that, Travel Insurance was not something we were seeking it just “tagged along” and we never actually used it.
However, somewhere in the depths of my files there will be the original documents which explain “what’s what” and I would expect any Customer to have similar information (depending on the Card they hold).
For me, it’s not a question of being optimistic. If I feel that a person is less than professional… I say goodbye and move on.
If a person behaves professionally, I listen and take my time to make any commitment … in fact, if someone pushes me to make a decision before I am ready.. I walk away from that too.
Our local CA does have good, well-trained staff. They have given me no reason to doubt them… (but my rules still hold.. if they don’t come up to scratch… I’ll be out of it.)
Yes, I have this for myself and trying to weigh up whether to add aged, infirm hubbie…Well he’s not really, but given the additional.premium they want you’d think he was on his last legs!
Yes it was great before they switched. I hate Aviva!
Our account address is our French address.
Dubious because I know most insurance companies will do anything to weasel out of paying a claim! So I would need to go through t’s & c’s meticulously…
Thanks to everyone for your comments. I’ll get my magnifying glass out and start combing through the small print!
Please let us know.
Me too, after many years with them they point blank refused to give us the legally necessary 3rd party insurance for our lovely and oh so gentle Rottweiler, Boss (picture top left). So I moved away with some shysters who took advantage of us 'till the old boy died.
